About The Position

Union Tank Car Company is seeking applicants to become a member of our production team at our full-service rail tank car repair shop in Muscatine, Iowa. The Inspector is responsible for inspecting materials, components, and tank car interiors to ensure they meet quality, safety, and regulatory standards. The role involves identifying defects, verifying repairs and coatings, documenting findings, and coordinating with vendors or customers as needed. The ideal candidate maintains a strong focus on accuracy, safety, and quality in a physically demanding industrial environment. Duties may vary, and employees may be asked to perform additional job functions as needed.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent, or ability to pass a Combined Basic Skills Assessment Test
  • Ability to work effectively and efficiently both independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions with minimal supervision
  • Ability to read, interpret, and adhere to safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, and other work-related documentation
  • Strong focus on safety and quality.
  • Ability to work any shift, including overtime, in accordance with the union contract
  • Dependable and reliable attendance

Nice To Haves

  • Experience performing inspections in an Industrial Repair or Manufacturing environment.
  • Rail industry experience
  • Tank car knowledge or experience

Responsibilities

  • Inspect incoming materials, fabricated components, and machined parts using applicable inspection methods; identify and reject items that do not meet requirements, properly marking accepted and rejected parts, and prepare accurate records and reports for management
  • Conduct inspections of tank car interiors to determine required repairs, including evaluation of existing coatings and verification that completed coating or repair work meets specifications
  • Identify defective materials and workmanship using drawings, engineering standards, and applicable codes
  • Perform joint inspections with vendors or customer representatives, as needed, to reach agreement on conformance or non-conformance
  • Maintain a clean, organized work area and promptly report any potential hazards
