About The Position

AECOM is seeking a highly motivated intermediate geotechnical engineer with experience in the design of mine tailings dams for tailings management projects in Canada and internationally. This role emphasizes technical skills and project execution, while ensuring technical excellence and compliance with regulatory standards in mine tailings management. This position can be based in any of AECOM's Canadian offices.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Geotechnical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 4 years of experience in geotechnical engineering, with a strong expertise in the design and management of mine tailings dams.
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation in Canada or eligibility for licensure within 3 months.
  • Demonstrated experience as a Deputy EOR for at least 2 tailings dams.
  • Proficiency in design software applied to embankments and tailings dams.
  • Experience with advanced numerical modeling techniques and software.
  • Excellent understanding of Canadian regulatory frameworks and industry guidelines (e.g., GISTM, CDA, ICMM, MAC).

Nice To Haves

  • Over 10 years of experience in geotechnical engineering, with a strong expertise in the design and management of mine tailings dams.
  • Master's or Ph.D. in Geotechnical Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Proficiency in advanced numerical modeling techniques.
  • Strong project management skills, including budget, schedule, and risk management.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a demonstrated ability to motivate and inspire teams.
  • The ability to communicate effectively in French and English is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical leadership in the design, analysis, and supervision of construction of tailings dams, embankments, and related infrastructure.
  • Perform geotechnical analyses, including slope stability, seepage, liquefaction, and settlement.
  • Conduct risk assessments and implement mitigation strategies for mine tailings facilities, focusing on seepage, slope stability, liquefaction, and water management.
  • Prepare and review technical reports, drawings, and specifications to ensure high-quality deliverables.
  • Ensure all projects meet or exceed regulatory requirements, industry best practices, and sustainability objectives.
  • Act as Deputy Engineer of Record (Deputy EOR) for tailings dam projects, with potential for future progression to Engineer of Record (EoR) role.
  • Mentor and train junior engineers, fostering a culture of technical excellence and collaboration.
  • Provide technical reviews and guidance to ensure the quality and consistency of project deliverables.
  • Stay updated on evolving regulatory frameworks and industry guidelines to ensure AECOM remains at the forefront of compliance.
  • Promote best practices in mine tailings management within industry associations and regulatory bodies, contributing to the advancement of the field.
