About The Position

WRITER is hiring an Infrastructure Engineer to help ensure its AI platform is available, performant, and reliable around the clock. The role focuses on proactively addressing systemic challenges, building resilient systems, automating infrastructure operations, and establishing reliability practices that support enterprise customers and the company’s growth. The position spans SRE, DevOps, infrastructure, and platform work. The engineer will typically focus on substantial initiatives such as improving on-call practices, release pipelines, multi-region infrastructure, or internal platforms. They will own the reliability, performance, and efficiency of core services end to end, including defining and upholding SLOs and error budgets and participating in on-call. The role also involves leading incident response and root-cause analysis, shaping longer-term platform investments, and collaborating with product, security, and engineering peers. This is a hybrid role based out of WRITER’s New York City, San Francisco, Seattle, or London hubs. The position reports to the Director of Engineering. WRITER is open to hiring at multiple levels, with compensation scaled to experience, expertise, and scope.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of experience in infrastructure engineering, DevOps, or a similar role focused on large-scale, highly available production systems at a high-growth product company.
  • Experience running containerization in production.
  • Experience with Helm and Terraform or Pulumi on at least one major cloud platform; AWS is preferred.
  • Good proficiency in Python or Go for automation and tooling.
  • Daily use of agentic AI tools such as Claude Code, Droid, Codex, or internal skills, and experience building or adopting AI-assisted workflows used by others.
  • Ability to identify systemic reliability weaknesses and propose solutions using first-principles reasoning and explicit tradeoff analysis.
  • Ability to make reversible changes, prepare rollbacks before production changes, use monitoring and logging systems such as Prometheus, Grafana, and ELK or equivalents, and stress systems safely.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills, including the ability to build relationships and work across teams.
  • Strong ownership and accountability for mission-critical systems.
  • At least one end-to-end, 0-to-1 infrastructure build with an associated outcome metric.

Nice To Haves

  • Software-engineering background with experience designing, building, and shipping substantial production code such as services, libraries, or internal frameworks in Python, Go, or a comparable language.
  • Ability to read and modify the codebases the infrastructure runs and move between infrastructure automation and feature engineering.

Responsibilities

  • Work across SRE, DevOps, infrastructure, and platform initiatives, focusing on substantial projects as priorities shift.
  • Automate operational tasks and infrastructure management with Python or Go, and reduce manual on-call work and operational toil.
  • Design scalable, fault-tolerant infrastructure across AWS, GCP, and Azure, using Kubernetes, Helm, Terraform, and related cloud and AI tooling.
  • Use AI agents and tools in daily workflows to investigate incidents, draft infrastructure changes, write runbooks, build tooling, and review pull requests.
  • Develop shared internal skills, context, and on-call workflows that enable both human teammates and agents to perform recurring infrastructure tasks.
  • Lead incident response, post-mortems, and root-cause analyses; apply findings to architecture and prevent repeated incidents.
  • Own the reliability, performance, and efficiency of core services end to end, define and uphold SLOs and error budgets, and carry the on-call pager.
  • Balance immediate operational work with longer-term platform planning for observability, cost, and reliability.
  • Advise product, security, and engineering peers on system reliability, performance, and scalability from design through launch.
  • Connect infrastructure priorities to product and revenue context and make evidence-based recommendations.
