About The Position

Infant/Toddler Caregivers maintain healthy, safe and stimulating environments for 8-9 infants or toddlers in an Early Head Start classroom through daily caregiving routines and intentional learning experiences to promote school readiness. Caregivers are responsible to complete daily documentation, screenings, assessments, home visits and conferences while working with children and their families as outlined in the Head Start Performance Standards and Community Care licensing.

Requirements

  • Minimum of twelve (12) units in early childhood education – Three (3) of which must be in infant/toddler studies - with completion of the following classes: Child Development; Child, Family and Community; Curriculum and other related coursework that meets Community Care Licensing criteria.
  • Original (or certified copies) of all credentials or certificates and college transcripts indicating applicable coursework to meet requirements of position as a condition of employment.
  • Ability to obtain (within 90 days of hire) and maintain the Child Development Permit through the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing at the minimum of Associate Teacher level
  • Ability to pass criminal record clearance
  • Clear TB test and statement of good health from a doctor are required as a condition of employment
  • Ability to provide proof of immunization against measles, pertussis, influenza, COVID-19
  • Willingness to report any suspected child abuse as required by state law
  • Current 1st Aid and CPR Certification or ability to obtain in 60 days, and remain current throughout employment

Nice To Haves

  • One year teaching experience in a licensed infant/toddler child care center or comparable group child care program preferred (previous experience teaching in a state funded or Early Head Start program highly desired).
  • Bilingual English/Spanish language preferred

Responsibilities

  • Provides care for eight or nine infants or toddlers in an Early Head Start classroom, including primary care for assigned infants or toddlers, including but not limited to feeding, diapering, supporting napping routines and providing intentional experiences while using developmentally appropriate practices.
  • Maintains and ensures a safe, clean and healthy learning environment for the infants or toddlers in their care with the implementation of required health practices and supervision and management of children in the classroom.
  • Provides effective and nurturing teacher-child interactions that promote the social and emotional development of infants or toddlers based on the selected research-based model, Program for Infant Toddler Care philosophies, Child Start philosophies and Early Head Start Performance Standards.
  • Promotes family partnerships and parent involvement by recognizing their strengths and interests, respecting family structure and ethnic/cultural diversity and reinforcing the role of the parent as their child’s first teacher.
  • Works with the family to support their child’s development with ongoing daily communication and the completion of home visits and conferences.
  • Participates in the planning and implementation of developmentally appropriate curriculum for infants or toddlers based on the agency selected research-based curriculum and following Head Start Performance Standards.
  • Assists in developing weekly lesson plans for the group of children and supports individualized lesson planning for individual children including the utilization of parent curriculum ideas and child outcome data.
  • Completes screenings and ongoing developmental assessments requirements for children in primary care group
  • Plans for daily routines and transitions so that they occur in a timely, predictable and unrushed manner according to each child’s needs.
  • Works in cooperation with other Infant/Toddler caregivers, Lead Infant/Toddler caregivers, consultants, community partners, volunteers and other assigned Child Start staff.
  • Provides adaptations or accommodations to the classroom environment and curriculum to ensure that children with disabilities are fully included into the classroom and provided individualized curriculum consistent with their IEPs or IFSPs.
  • Safeguards confidentiality of personal information of children and families by upholding mandates and policies.
  • Prepares food service; breakfast, lunch and snacks, including cooking from recipes, checking for allergies and correct use of cooking utensils, microwaves, electric fry pans, griddles, etc.
  • Conducts food prep clean-up, helps ensure safety, health and sanitation; maintains food service records.
  • Provides substitute coverage as needed.
  • Attends pertinent training, workshops and conferences both within and outside of Early Head Start at the direction of the Center Director.
  • Remains current in ECE/Child Development best practices through participation in continuing education and review of resources provided by Child Start department staff.
  • Actively participates in site staff meetings and other appropriate meetings to support and advance services.
  • Completes child and family documentation including but not limited to daily communication logs, child files, lesson plans, ongoing assessments, screenings, conferences or home visits.
  • Completes required or requested documentation to ensure up to date monitoring of mandatory regulations.
  • Further relationships within site, position, region, agency and community to ensure integrated and comprehensive services for families with children.
  • Works with community partners to support comprehensive services for children and their families.
  • Travels to families’ homes, community locations and other Child Start locations as identified
  • Reports any suspected child abuse as required by state law
  • Serves children with special needs. Some staff may be required to provide services in a full inclusion model/classroom.
  • Works with families from diverse cultural and economic backgrounds
  • Able to develop positive working relationships with other staff, parents and volunteers
  • Must be committed to a high standard of safety and be willing and able to comply with employer safety policies
  • Must maintain regular and acceptable attendance in compliance with agency Attendance policy
