About The Position

Summit City Steel is a structural steel erection and crane service company with a growing industrial services division focused on equipment moving, setting, and machinery installation. We are looking for an experienced millwright and rigger to carry that work — moving, setting, leveling, and aligning production equipment in plants and on commercial projects. Our crane service division is in-house, so this person works alongside our own operators and equipment rather than waiting on an outside rental. The right candidate is a strong rigger first, a capable millwright second, and comfortable running the ground on their own picks.

Requirements

• Journeyman millwright, or equivalent documented field experience in industrial equipment setting
• 5+ years of field experience moving, setting, and aligning industrial equipment
• Demonstrated rigging and signaling ability on crane-supported lifts
• Field welding experience; able to pass a weld test
• Able to read and work from equipment drawings, foundation plans, and installation manuals
• Comfortable working at heights and in active, operating industrial plants
• Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation
• Able to travel and work overtime, nights, and weekends for shutdowns and outages
• Able to lift 50+ lbs, climb, and work in all weather conditions
• Prior experience running a crew on industrial equipment installations (for foreman consideration)
• Ability to plan the day’s work, sequence lifts, and direct a crew safely and productively (for foreman consideration)
• Comfort dealing directly with GCs, plant managers, and equipment vendors on the job (for foreman consideration)
• Experience managing daily reporting, manpower, and material coordination (for foreman consideration)

Nice To Haves

• NCCCO crane operator certification or documented crane operating experience
• NCCCO Rigger Level I/II and Signalperson certification
• Laser alignment experience
• Plant relocation, turnaround, or outage experience
• Conveyor, press, and production line installation experience
• Structural experience — setting and connecting iron, decking, reinforcing
• Welding certifications (AWS D1.1)
• OSHA 30

Responsibilities

• Move, rig, and set production machinery — presses, CNC equipment, conveyors, pumps, gearboxes, dust collectors, tanks, and process equipment
• Machinery moving using skates, rollers, air casters, gantries, hydraulic jacking and cribbing, forklifts, and toe jacks
• Disassemble, transport, and reassemble equipment for plant relocations and new installs
• Set, level, shim, and anchor equipment to tolerance; drill and set anchor bolts and epoxy anchors
• Grout baseplates and soleplates — non-shrink and epoxy grout
• Plan and execute rigging for machinery and heavy loads; select slings, shackles, spreader bars, and hardware; calculate load weights and centers of gravity
• Run the ground on crane picks — signaling, tag lines, load control, landing zone setup
• Develop rigging plans and lift sequences for confined plant environments and low-headroom work
• Level and align equipment using precision levels, optical instruments, laser alignment, and dial indicators
• Shaft and coupling alignment; install bearings, couplings, drives, and shafting
• Basic hydraulic and pneumatic connections, piping, and mechanical tie-ins
• Troubleshoot and correct alignment, vibration, and fit-up issues during startup
• Field welding on equipment, supports, framing, and mounting applications (stick and flux-core)
• Burn, cut, and fit as required for field modifications and repairs
• Fabricate and install equipment supports, platforms, catwalks, and mounting steel
• Work from equipment drawings, foundation plans, and manufacturer installation specs
• Daily jobsite documentation and reporting through Procore
• Operate forklifts, telehandlers, scissor and boom lifts
• Maintain tools, rigging gear, and equipment; pull damaged gear out of service
• Support the erection crew on structural work as schedules require
• Follow SC Steel, OSHA, and plant-specific safety requirements at all times — pre-task planning, rigging inspections, 100% tie-off
• Work within plant permit systems: lockout/tagout, hot work, confined space
• Participate in daily huddles and job hazard analyses
• Stop work and escalate when conditions are unsafe
