About The Position

Summit City Steel is seeking an experienced millwright and rigger for its industrial services division, which handles equipment moving, setting, and machinery installation. The role involves moving, setting, leveling, and aligning production equipment in plants and on commercial projects. The successful candidate will work alongside the company’s in-house crane operators and equipment, and should be a strong rigger, a capable millwright, and comfortable running the ground on crane picks. The position may be filled at the foreman level for a candidate with the relevant experience. Foreman hires receive a company truck and foreman-level benefits. Technician hires have a path to foreman as they demonstrate the necessary capabilities.

Requirements

Journeyman millwright qualification or equivalent documented field experience in industrial equipment setting.
At least 5 years of field experience moving, setting, and aligning industrial equipment.
Demonstrated rigging and signaling ability on crane-supported lifts.
Field welding experience and ability to pass a weld test.
Ability to read and work from equipment drawings, foundation plans, and installation manuals.
Comfort working at heights and in active, operating industrial plants.
Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
Ability to travel and work overtime, nights, and weekends for shutdowns and outages.
Ability to lift 50+ pounds, climb, and work in all weather conditions.

Nice To Haves

NCCCO crane operator certification or documented crane operating experience.
NCCCO Rigger Level I/II and Signalperson certification.
Laser alignment experience.
Plant relocation, turnaround, or outage experience.
Conveyor, press, and production line installation experience.
Structural experience, including setting and connecting iron, decking, and reinforcing.
AWS D1.1 welding certification.
OSHA 30.
For foreman-level consideration: prior experience running a crew on industrial equipment installations; ability to plan daily work, sequence lifts, and direct a crew safely and productively; comfort dealing directly with general contractors, plant managers, and equipment vendors; and experience managing daily reporting, manpower, and material coordination.

Responsibilities

Move, rig, and set production machinery, including presses, CNC equipment, conveyors, pumps, gearboxes, dust collectors, tanks, and process equipment.
Move machinery using skates, rollers, air casters, gantries, hydraulic jacking and cribbing, forklifts, and toe jacks.
Disassemble, transport, and reassemble equipment for plant relocations and new installations.
Set, level, shim, and anchor equipment to tolerance; drill and set anchor bolts and epoxy anchors.
Grout baseplates and soleplates using non-shrink and epoxy grout.
Plan and execute rigging for machinery and heavy loads, including selecting rigging hardware and calculating load weights and centers of gravity.
Run the ground on crane picks by signaling, using tag lines, controlling loads, and setting up landing zones.
Develop rigging plans and lift sequences for confined plant environments and low-headroom work.
Level and align equipment using precision levels, optical instruments, laser alignment, and dial indicators.
Align shafts and couplings; install bearings, couplings, drives, and shafting.
Make basic hydraulic and pneumatic connections, piping, and mechanical tie-ins.
Troubleshoot and correct alignment, vibration, and fit-up issues during startup.
Perform field welding on equipment, supports, framing, and mounting applications using stick and flux-core processes.
Burn, cut, and fit materials for field modifications and repairs.
Fabricate and install equipment supports, platforms, catwalks, and mounting steel.
Work from equipment drawings, foundation plans, and manufacturer installation specifications.
Complete daily jobsite documentation and reporting through Procore.
Operate forklifts, telehandlers, scissor lifts, and boom lifts.
Maintain tools, rigging gear, and equipment, and remove damaged gear from service.
Support the erection crew on structural work as schedules require.
Follow company, OSHA, and plant-specific safety requirements, including pre-task planning, rigging inspections, and 100% tie-off.
Work within plant permit systems, including lockout/tagout, hot work, and confined space procedures.
Participate in daily huddles and job hazard analyses; stop work and escalate unsafe conditions.
