About The Position

The Industrial Energy Management (IEM) Co-op Student will support energy efficiency, monitoring, and optimization initiatives across TRIUMF’s facilities. This role offers hands-on experience with complex mechanical, electrical, and control systems, including HVAC, compressed air, chilled water, and high-energy research equipment. TRIUMF is Canada's national laboratory for particle and nuclear physics, situated on the vibrant south campus of the University of British Columbia, nestled within the beautiful Pacific Spirit Park in Vancouver, BC. TRIUMF offers help with travel costs for students outside the Vancouver and surrounding area. Requirements

  • Third or Fourth year, BC student currently enrolled in Mechanical, Electrical, Energy Systems, Environmental Engineering, or related discipline.
  • Basic understanding of HVAC and energy systems
  • Experience with Excel (Python or MATLAB is an asset)
  • Familiarity with EMIS, SCADA, or BAS systems is an asset
  • Understanding of energy audits is an asset
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Good communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and in teams

Responsibilities

  • Assist in collecting, analyzing, and interpreting energy consumption data
  • Support development and maintenance of Energy Management Information Systems (EMIS)
  • Identify energy savings opportunities through data analysis and site walkthroughs
  • Assist with submetering strategy and data validation
  • Participate in energy audits
  • Monitor performance of key systems (chillers, boilers, HVAC, compressors)
  • Support measurement & verification (M&V) activities
  • Prepare reports, dashboards, and presentations
  • Collaborate with engineering and operations teams
  • Assist with utility incentive applications (BC Hydro)
