Industrial Designer II

Blox•Bessemer, AL
•Onsite

About The Position

BLOX is a Design-Manufacture-Construct company that designs and builds modular buildings, building components, and sub-assemblies in a controlled factory environment before delivering and installing them at building sites. The Industrial Designer II shapes how BLOX building products look, work, and feel for the people who use them, and carries design intent through to production. Products include spaces and products used in healthcare, mission-critical, and other facilities, such as patient bathrooms, exam rooms, and headwalls. The role joins a new product launch team and leads concept development, form, ergonomics, configuration, and materials. The designer partners with engineering and manufacturing to ensure designs are efficient to build, transport, and install, connecting user-centered design with manufacturability, cost, and quality. The position is based on-site at BLOX’s Bessemer, Alabama facility, with time split between the design office and manufacturing floor.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Design, Product Design, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • 3–6 years of experience designing physical products that went into production, such as fixtures, appliances, furniture, equipment, or building products.
  • A portfolio showing concept development through production, including how designs were refined for manufacturing.
  • Strong 3D CAD skills in SolidWorks, Inventor, Rhino, NX, or similar, and the ability to produce production-ready models and drawings.
  • Working knowledge of fabrication methods such as sheet metal, structural steel, welding, fastening, and molding, as well as tolerancing.
  • Experience with ergonomics and user-centered design for physical products.
  • Ability to work on the shop floor with production teams to solve problems in real time.
  • Ability to walk the production floor and wear required personal protective equipment.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience designing plumbing fixtures, appliances, healthcare environments, or other products used in buildings.
  • Experience with modular, prefabricated, or offsite construction products, or other configurable built products.
  • Experience creating and maintaining bills of material and managing engineering change control.
  • Rendering and visualization skills, such as KeyShot or similar.
  • Familiarity with Product Data Management or Product Lifecycle Management systems and Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing.
  • Experience supporting a new product launch from concept through production.
  • Exposure to Revit or other building information modeling tools.

Responsibilities

  • Lead concept development for new products and refine existing designs for usability, ergonomics, configuration, materials, and cost.
  • Research how patients, staff, and maintenance technicians use products and translate those insights into design decisions.
  • Develop sketches, 3D models, renderings, and physical or virtual prototypes to explore and communicate design options.
  • Define color, material, and finish (CMF) choices that balance durability, cleanability, appearance, cost, and availability.
  • Build production-ready 3D models and drawings, and partner with engineering to complete fabrication files, specification sheets, and bills of material before production release.
  • Apply design-for-manufacturing and design-for-assembly principles so products are efficient to build, inspect, ship, and install.
  • Maintain design revisions so models, drawings, and bills of material remain traceable and aligned through change control.
  • Work with manufacturing, quality, supply chain, and program management to resolve build issues and feed lessons back into designs.
  • Track design-related rework, scrap, and delays, and lead continuous-improvement actions to reduce them.
  • Support prototyping, first-article builds, and product launch readiness.
