About The Position

The Imaging Services Extern (ISE) in Nuclear Medicine screens, positions, and images patients. The extern works only when another Registered Imaging Services Technologist is on duty and works closely with the Imaging Services Team Leader and Radiologist to produce quality images in accordance with department protocols. Incumbents may hold the ISE position for no more than 18 months. The role also includes support functions such as reviewing schedules and procedure requests, maintaining supplies and inventory, preparing and cleaning rooms, arranging patient transport when needed, attending job-related training, and contributing to student education. The extern provides patient care appropriate to patients’ age, developmental, and cultural needs; maintains confidentiality; communicates and collaborates with patients, families, colleagues, physicians, and other customers; and follows Trinity Health’s Mission and Core Values.

Requirements

Completion of two years of an accredited Nuclear Medicine Program.
Currently enrolled in a Nuclear Medicine internship program.
Adherence to radiation safety protocols for safe handling of radiopharmaceuticals.
Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
No prior experience required.

Responsibilities

Screen patients before exams for safety issues, including confirming patient identity, clinical history, and procedure orders; use two patient identifiers for all exams.
Follow procedure protocols according to Radiologist specifications and perform exams using appropriate techniques and views for the patient’s condition and requested exam.
Complete patient documentation according to department and hospital policy, and ensure studies are reviewed and completed in medical records according to modality and workflow specifications.
Work only when another Registered Imaging Services Technologist is on duty and collaborate with the Imaging Services Team Leader and Radiologist to produce quality images.
Participate in student education and meet requirements established by the Nuclear Medicine program.
Review patient schedules and procedure requests to identify potential problems or incorrect orders, and communicate with patient units; arrange transport to the department when needed.
Maintain department supplies and work-area inventory, notify appropriate personnel of items that need ordering, and prepare and clean rooms as needed.
Attend training related to daily job functions, including medical record and radiology applications, and maintain program requirements.
Identify and assist in resolving safety, sanitation, and environmental maintenance problems; report preventable hazards and unsafe practices to management immediately.
Provide quality, age-appropriate and culturally responsive patient care, demonstrate unit and area competencies, and promote effective communication and teamwork.
Maintain cooperative relationships, approach conflict constructively, help identify problems and solutions, and use available resources to support patients, families, hospital personnel, physicians, and other customers.
Maintain confidentiality of information about patients, physicians, employees, and visitors, discussing it only with appropriate personnel in appropriate private settings.
Demonstrate self-directed learning and perform duties with customer-care focus, attention to detail, independent thinking, integrity, and initiative.
Adhere to radiation safety protocols for safe handling of radiopharmaceuticals and perform job duties in the safest possible manner.
