About The Position

We are seeking a motivated and curious individual who’s excited to explore a career in Human Resources. Under the direction of the Human Resources Manager, the Human Resources Intern will focus on project-based work in support of city-wide human resources functions across the employee lifecycle.

Requirements

  • Enrolled in, or graduated within the last 12 months, from a post-secondary degree focusing on Human Resources, Business, or closely related field.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Work, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Ability to complete the essential duties and responsibilities of the internship with or without reasonable accommodations.
  • A desire to learn and contribute to a dynamic team.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding sensitive personnel and employee information.
  • Valid driver's license, or ability to arrange reliable transportation to offsite meetings and events.

Nice To Haves

  • Currently enrolled in a graduate program related to Human Resources, Organizational Psychology, Public Administration, or related field.
  • Six to twelve months of professional experience in a HR role or a related field.
  • Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) Certification or other equivalent professional certification within the industry.
  • Experience working with a City or other governmental agency.
  • Knowledge of Federal, State, and local laws and regulations regarding public sector employment including but not limited to Pay Equity, Veterans Preference, Americans with Disabilities Act, HIPPA, and MN Government Data Practices Act.
  • Skills in goal setting; program management; program development, implementation, and evaluation; and/or business analysis techniques and principles.

Responsibilities

  • Gain exposure to core HR functions, including recruitment, onboarding, benefits, employee relations, and compliance
  • Assist with strategic HR projects, such as employee engagement initiatives, policy updates, wellness programs, and HR data analysis
  • Assist with recruitment and selection tasks such as job posting maintenance, applicant tracking system support, interview scheduling, and reference checks
  • Assist with the yearly benefits survey and gain professional knowledge of benefits for all employees
  • Support planning and execution of employee wellness events and recognition programs
  • Collaborate with HR team members on various day-to-day tasks and priorities
  • Performing other duties as assigned
