About The Position

Homemakers Furniture is seeking a people-first HR professional for their growing Tiffin, Iowa location. As the HR Generalist, you will be the primary HR contact on-site, responsible for the full HR function including recruitment, onboarding, benefits, compliance, and employee relations. Requirements

  • Two (2) or more years of experience in a human resources role including recruiting, employee relations, HR administration, or compliance.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and conflict resolution skills; comfortable engaging with employees at all levels and committed to a people-first culture.
  • Ability to operate with a high degree of independence as the primary on-site HR presence while remaining closely aligned with the Urbandale HR team and company-wide policies.
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced retail environment.
  • Proficiency in HRIS systems, applicant tracking systems, payroll platforms, and Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Strong aptitude for translating employee and compliance data into actionable solutions for store leadership.
  • Willingness to occasionally travel to the Urbandale headquarters or other locations for HR team collaboration, training, or projects.
  • Passion for people, perseverance, and a genuine drive to build a great place to work.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion, professionalism, and sound judgment in all employee interactions.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field is a plus.
  • Experience in retail, home furnishings, or consumer-facing HR environments preferred; familiarity with hourly workforce dynamics, high-volume seasonal hiring, and non-commission sales team structures is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Manage full-cycle recruitment for Tiffin location roles from sourcing and screening through offer and onboarding; collaborate with Talent Acquisition and Community Engagement to support local hiring events and community partnerships in the Tiffin and greater Iowa City area.
  • Lead new hire orientation and onboarding processes to integrate employees into Homemakers’ culture, values, and store-specific procedures.
  • Serve as the primary on-site HR contact for Tiffin employees and managers — providing guidance on policies, benefits, and employee relations matters, and partnering with store leadership on employee concerns and resolutions.
  • Administer benefits, leave management (FMLA, ADA accommodations), workers’ compensation, and employee documentation.
  • Support compliance with federal, state, and local labor laws including EEOC, OSHA, wage and hour regulations, and employment eligibility requirements.
  • Maintain and apply HR policies and the employee handbook; escalate policy updates or exceptions to the broader HR team as appropriate.
  • Assist with performance management processes, coaching documentation, disciplinary actions, and employee development initiatives.
  • Maintain accurate employee records, HRIS data, and compliance documentation; support payroll coordination and employee data accuracy in partnership with payroll providers; provide reporting to store and HR leadership as requested.
  • Coordinate employee engagement initiatives, recognition programs, and retention strategies suited to a retail environment with varied schedules and shift structures.
  • Other HR-related duties as assigned, including special projects, compliance audits, and operational support.
