Human Performance Sensors Engineer

GeoControl SystemsHouston, TX
Onsite

About The Position

GeoControl Systems, Inc. is seeking a Human Performance Sensors Engineer at the NASA Johnson Space Center (JSC) in Houston, TX. This is an early-career role (1-5 years of experience) focused on supporting on-site Internet of Things (IoT) and edge device operations. The engineer will deploy, monitor, and troubleshoot connected hardware, write scripts for system maintenance, and gain exposure to cloud, networking, and embedded technologies. The position offers mentorship from senior engineers and a growth path in edge architecture, cloud engineering, or network engineering. The role involves hands-on work with real systems and users in a mission-driven environment. The candidate will join the Data and Software team, which focuses on data collection and access for astronauts and researchers, with work spanning flight operations, EVA planning, human performance, and exploration mission systems. The team's work includes developing software for EVA missions, human thermal analysis, metabolic consumption modeling, helmet-mounted display technology, unobtrusive measurement strategies, and integrated cardiovascular modeling. The team publishes in various conferences and ships software for mission contexts.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in computer engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, Information Technology, or a related field, with 1-5 years of professional experience.
  • Exposure to IoT or edge devices through coursework, internships, personal projects, or hobbyist work (e.g., Raspberry Pi, Arduino, ESP32, industrial sensors, single-board computers).
  • Must be a US citizen or lawful permanent resident.
  • Basic coding ability in Python or Go. Comfortable reading code, modifying scripts, and writing small utilities from scratch.
  • Ability to work in a Git workflow.
  • Strong work ethic, reliability, and willingness to be on-site and hands-on.
  • Comfort troubleshooting unfamiliar problems and learning new tools quickly.
  • Interest in human performance monitoring, aerospace physiology, and wearable biosensors — or demonstrated curiosity about the intersection of hardware, physiological data, and operational research.
  • At least one strong professional reference (manager, professor, internship lead, or project supervisor) who can speak directly to your work ethic, reliability, and follow-through.

Nice To Haves

  • Exposure to AWS services — IoT Core, Greengrass, Lambda, S3, CloudWatch, or similar.
  • Networking experience or genuine interest in learning: TCP/IP fundamentals, VLANs, DNS/DHCP, routing, firewalls, or wireless protocols (Wi-Fi, LoRa, Zigbee, cellular).
  • Linux command-line comfort and basic shell scripting.
  • Familiarity with MQTT, REST APIs, or time-series databases.
  • Any prior experience working in regulated, secure, or research environments.

Responsibilities

  • Install, configure, and maintain IoT sensors, gateways, and edge compute devices in lab and facility environments.
  • Write small scripts and tools in Python or Go to automate device provisioning, data collection, and routine diagnostics.
  • Monitor device health and connectivity, triage issues in the field, and escalate or resolve them with the broader engineering team.
  • Support data flow from edge devices to upstream systems, including cloud endpoints (AWS) where applicable.
  • Document deployments, network topology, and standard operating procedures so the team can scale what works.
  • Partner with networking, security, and software teams to keep deployments reliable and compliant with site requirements.
  • Demonstrate a positive problem-solving attitude with an enthusiasm for working as part of an exceptional team.
  • Demonstrate a strong work ethic and commitment to the customer and team.
  • Serve as a test subject for protocol and hardware evaluations on a volunteer basis.
  • Must maintain regular and acceptable attendance level as determined by the Company.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
