About The Position

CBC News is launching a new weekday morning current affairs radio program and a weekly news podcast to serve audiences in the Hamilton region. This role involves being an editorial leader and dynamic on-air presenter, with a passion for drawing information, emotion, and stories out of interview subjects. The host will be responsible for analyzing a broad range of issues, reacting to breaking news, and championing stories from under-represented communities. As a leader on the CBC Hamilton team, this role also includes acting as a team unifier, mentor, and collaborator, offering creative solutions and coaching to team members. The position requires ensuring all CBC journalistic standards are met, with stories being fair, balanced, accurate, thoughtful, immediate, and resonant with the communities served.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated experience working as a host in a fast-paced daily multiplatform news environment.
  • An engaging, curious, and spontaneous on-air personality, with a wide range of interests, knowledge and insight.
  • Strong journalistic skills, demonstrated through original story ideas, live interviewing, innovative storytelling, and writing and vetting abilities.
  • Excellent critical thinking skills, including knowledge of and familiarity with CBC journalistic standards as well as the legal and ethical issues related to journalism.
  • Ability to react quickly to changing circumstances and breaking news; comfortable going off-script when needed.
  • Knowledge of and an interest in emerging storytelling formats and a willingness to embrace change and new tasks across all CBC platforms (audio, video, digital).
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to collaborate across teams and locations.
  • A proven work ethic and a positive team-first attitude.
  • A strong desire to live and promote the values of diversity and an inclusive and respectful work culture.
  • A passion for community outreach and engagement.
  • A strong proven connection to the communities we serve in Hamilton, and a deep and nuanced understanding and appreciation of diverse perspectives and lived experiences.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s licence as well as a driving record that meets the minimum requirements of CBC/Radio-Canada's insurance company.
  • Ability and willingness to work flexible hours as required.
  • University degree or equivalent in a related field, with a minimum of five years of relevant or comparable experience.

Responsibilities

  • Host live on air weekdays from 6 to 8:30 a.m., conducting interviews on a wide variety of current events and providing narration and linking continuity between segments.
  • Host and help produce a weekly local news podcast.
  • Interact extemporaneously with program participants such as guests, reporters, experts and members of the audience.
  • Report live and breaking news on-air, ad-libbing the latest details seamlessly into reporting, especially where information is sometimes scant or changing frequently.
  • Pitch and produce original stories that deepen CBC Hamilton’s community connections, elevate a range of voices and reflect the day’s top local news.
  • Conduct research and interviews, gather audio and video, write scripts, and package and present content across platforms (audio, digital and video).
  • Work with producer and team to line up shows, vet scripts and plan special programming.
  • Cultivate and develop working relationships with a large pool of sources and contacts to enhance understanding of the region and its issues.
  • Participate in community outreach activities to promote CBC News, with a focus on growing audiences, building connections and creating content that reflects community input.
  • Host and appear on other live and taped programming across platforms (audio, digital and video), in the studio and out in the field.
  • Provide support, feedback and guidance to the team, working together to keep the energy high and the content fresh.
