Hospice volunteers provide support to patients and their families or caregivers in a variety of capacities, including personal care, emotional support, companionship, practical assistance, bereavement support, errands and transportation, and administrative office work. Volunteers may attend interdisciplinary group meetings as appropriate and report patient and family or caregiver responses to volunteer services. Volunteer services operate under the direction of a Volunteer Coordinator, who develops, implements, and evaluates the program at least annually; arranges volunteer support in accordance with the plan of care; and ensures volunteers document their activities for inclusion in patient clinical records. The coordinator also tracks volunteer use and cost savings, ensures volunteer service hours exceed 5% of total patient care hours provided by paid and contracted hospice personnel, reports annual cost savings to the Governing Body, and documents ongoing volunteer recruitment, training, and retention efforts.
