About The Position
Unpaid hospice vigil volunteers are needed to provide comfort and a calm presence to patients at the end of their lives in Medina County and surrounding areas. Volunteers will sit bedside with patients, either alone or with the patient's family, to ensure no one dies alone and to offer support. This role is crucial in creating a soothing environment and providing empathetic companionship during a difficult time.
Requirements
- Maintain confidentiality
- Ability to work independently and take directions well.
- Empathetic listening skills
- Ability to understand and tolerate hardship stories.

Responsibilities
- Being a calm presence.
- Ensuring patient is comfortable (monitoring for signs of pain, ensuring patient is not too hot/cold, holding patient’s hand, etc.)
- Establishing a calm, soothing environment (playing patient’s favorite music, aromatherapy, reading inspirational text relevant to patient beliefs, etc.)
- Being present so patient does not die alone.
- Providing a supportive presence to patient’s family that is sitting bedside.
- Being open to conversation and sharing of memories/feelings.
- Empathic, active listening
