About The Position

Direct and work with others to maintain LSU grounds. This role requires the ability to operate hand and power equipment, some plant identification knowledge, chemical application, pruning, equipment maintenance, raking, and litter pickup. The position involves working in adverse weather conditions, with potential for overtime and weekend work. A key physical requirement is the ability to lift 50 lbs. The equipment used may include: riding and push mowers, string trimmers, blowers, backpack blowers and sprayers, tractors, ZTRs, hedgers, edgers, and chainsaws. Responsibilities also include storm debris cleanup, drain cleaning, laying sod, weed removal, mulching, digging, grading, cleaning signs and other items, painting, pressure washing, and planting.

Requirements

  • Three years of experience or training in farming, the care and maintenance of trees and shrubs, or groundskeeping; OR Eighteen semester hours in a plant science or landscape field of study.
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions.
  • Overtime and Weekend Work.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds.
  • Ability to stand, kneel, and bend.
  • Ability to reach overhead.
  • Valid Louisiana Class E License.
  • Must have valid U.S. work authorization at the time of hire and maintain that valid work authorization throughout employment.

Responsibilities

  • Direct others and/or in the operation of power riding mower (25HP or less), trimmer, edger, blower, hedger, etc. to maintain grounds, sidewalks, plazas, building entrances, canals, building perimeters, tree perimeters, road sides, etc. in a neat, clean, and safe condition.
  • Support arboriculture service with labor to chip limbs, haul debris, perform light chain saw work, pruning, chemical spraying, etc.
  • Direct others and/or apply chemicals to control weeds, control pests, fertilize and amend soils, apply mulch to beds and under tree canopies, perform weed removal, assist with ornamental and flower planting, litter removal, litter container servicing for cleanliness, cigarette butt removal, etc.
  • Maintain interior plants to include watering, pruning, fertilizing, relocation, rotating, cleaning, treatment for disease and insects.
  • Direct others and/or assist with irrigation work, digging, grading, drain basin cleaning, concrete repair labor as needed.
  • Direct others and/or perform inspections on mobile equipment and vehicles.
  • Change blades and tires as necessary on mowers, keep some records.
  • Assist with preventative maintenance as required.
  • Work special events (athletic, fraternity, public, etc.) to assist with litter control and related cleanup.
  • Fills in for a Horticultural Attendant-Superintendent to direct the activity or 2 or more crews of Horticultural Attendants, Mobile Equipment Operators, and others in assigned tasks.
  • Perform other related work as assigned.
