About The Position

The Village of Millers Creek is seeking a Horticultural Therapist - Independent Contractor to join their team in Ajax, ON. This part-time role focuses on providing recreational programming and holistic care to residents, fostering their well-being and life purpose through gardening-based activities. The position is integral to the multidisciplinary team, advocating for residents and supporting their individual needs within a resident-centered social culture.

Requirements

  • Be enrolled in or completed a Degree in Horticulture Therapy or equivalent
  • Completed the required 480 hours of internship
  • Be an eligible member of the Canadian Horticulture Therapy Association

  • Display a caring and respectful attitude toward our residents, families, and team members

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience working with seniors is an asset
  • Knowledge of therapy practices, methods, techniques and opportunities to improve resident’s well-being and holistic health
  • An understanding of the relevant sections of the Long-Term Care Homes Act, 2007

Responsibilities

  • Support and embrace the resident-centered social culture and deliver the highest quality of recreational programming.
  • Work as a key member of the Village and neighbourhood multidisciplinary teams to understand residents’ individual needs.
  • Advocate for residents to actively participate in decisions about their care.
  • Foster exemplary relationships with residents, their families and the Village team to deliver holistic care that focuses on flexible living and quality of life.
  • Plan gardening-based activities, either on a per-session basis or incorporated into a larger curriculum.
  • Provide hands-on experiences for residents including planting seeds and caring for plants both indoors and outside.
  • Support residents to learn, grow, find life purpose and meaning in combination with the Recreation Team.
  • Plan and implement programs that contribute to a resident’s holistic health care goals, as outlined in Care Plans, by encouraging physical, emotional, spiritual, social and cognitive growth for residents.
