A Horticultural Assistant performs indoor and outdoor horticultural work in greenhouses including conservatories, landscapes, parks and gardens for municipal displays. The work of this class involves no supervisory duties or responsibilities. Incumbents receive moderate supervision from a technical superior. Employees in this class work a conventional workweek that may include night and weekend work. Work is performed in, gardens, greenhouses and city landscapes where such conditions as the seasonal extremes of weather, pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers, and insects may be encountered. Work requires moderate physical exertion in the lifting and moving of large plants, mulch, soil and fertilizers, installation of gardens and the arranging of displays.

Requirements

  • Have a high school diploma or GED certification from an accredited institution.
  • Have two years of experience in the propagation and growing of plants, trees and shrubs in a commercial nursery, greenhouse or landscape operation.
  • Have a valid Maryland Class C Noncommercial driver's license or an equivalent driver's license and eligible to obtain a Baltimore City driver’s permit.
  • Knowledge of plant growth and care including basic plant identification.
  • Knowledge of the principles and techniques of various plants through cuttings, seeds or division.
  • Knowledge of the techniques of indoor and outdoor horticulture.
  • Knowledge of the proper use of pesticides and fertilizers.
  • Knowledge of local flora, climate, weather patterns and soil conditions.
  • Knowledge of greenhouse culture and climate control.
  • Ability to recognize conditions detrimental to plants and to take appropriate measures for their elimination.
  • Ability to keep records and prepare reports.

Nice To Haves

  • Completion of an apprenticeship program in the propagation and growing of plants may be substituted for the education and experience requirement.
