About The Position

The JCC Ranch Camp is seeking enthusiastic and experienced individuals to join their team as Horseback Trips Guides for the summer season. This role involves leading campers on multi-day horseback trips, teaching riding skills, and ensuring a safe and memorable experience for all participants. Staff members are expected to be active participants in camp life, fostering a positive and inclusive community for both campers and fellow staff.

Requirements

  • Valid driver's license and ability to transport campers using company vehicles.
  • One year of experience with group facilitation of teenagers.
  • One year of prior experience leading and/or guiding backpacking trips.
  • Two years of experience teaching Western horseback riding.
  • Current Wilderness First Responder certification.
  • Ability to use SatPhone and Spot Device.
  • High-energy, enthusiastic, creative, and open-minded personality.
  • Ability to attend Staff Orientations.
  • Ability to live at camp for the summer season (minimum 5-6 weeks).
  • Operative auditory and visual functioning.
  • Ability to walk upwards of two miles each day, including use of stairs and uneven terrain.
  • Ability to stand, sit in chairs or on the ground, run, and swim.
  • Ability to lift or body block campers when necessary.
  • Ability to hike on uneven terrain at high elevations while carrying a 50-60 lbs. backpack for extended durations of over one mile per day.
  • Ability to work in a hectic, sometimes stressful environment while maintaining the standard of care.
  • Satisfactorily fulfill requirements for employment at the Staenberg-Loup JCC, including background screening, three references, documentation, and compliance with CDHS law.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's degree or degree in progress in outdoor education, psychology, social work, education, or other related field or equivalent experience.

Responsibilities

  • Lead an 8-day horseback trip out of camp into the backcountry.
  • Build campers' personal skills, bond the group, and teach self-sufficiency in camping and horseback riding.
  • Work as part of the on-site wrangler team to lead horseback riding instruction and lessons.
  • Ensure horseback riding instruction and lessons are safe, fun, and memorable.
  • Provide feedback on trip intensity and adjust to fit camper needs.
  • Drive a 15-passenger Turtle Top Bus.
  • Assist with issuing and returning gear, ensuring it is in good repair.
  • Ensure camper safety through conscientious decision-making.
  • Create and run multiple programs each day for campers in the specialty area that are safe, fun, and memorable.
  • Attend Staff Orientations.
  • Live at camp for the summer season.
  • Prioritize the physical, social, emotional health, safety, and well-being of campers.
  • Work as a team with co-staff to ensure daily operations run smoothly and complete daily camper notes.
  • Create an inclusive community for campers and staff.
  • Participate in all camp activities with campers, including riding horses, swimming, camping, playing games, singing songs, and roasting s'mores.
  • Know the whereabouts and activities of campers at all times.
  • Manage camper behaviors using positive behavior management techniques, enforcing safety policies, emergency procedures, and camp rules.
  • Be flexible and adaptable to changing situations at camp.
  • Live in a bunk with co-staff and campers.
  • Perform other assigned duties and responsibilities.
