About The Position

This position is for a Histology Trainee at Nebraska Methodist Hospital. The role involves processing, embedding, cutting, and staining tissue sections under the direction of a histology technician or histotechnologist. The trainee will learn essential histology techniques, prepare reagents and stains, perform quality control, and maintain instruments. The position also requires participating as a team member, accommodating laboratory needs, and adhering to safety protocols. The work schedule is Monday-Friday, with potential weekend duties after training is complete, and start times varying between 4 am and 8 am depending on training needs.

Requirements

HT: At least 60 semester hours (90 quarter hours) of academic credit from a regionally accredited college/university, with a combination of 12 semester hours (18 quarter hours) of biology and chemistry (must include credit hours in both), or an associate degree from a regionally accredited college/university, with a combination of 12 semester hours (18 quarter hours) of biology and chemistry(must include credit hours in both)
HTL: Baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college/university with a combination of 30 semester hours (45 quarter hours) of biology and chemistry (must include credit hours in both)

Responsibilities

Learn required information by reading and studying histology guides and textbooks, utilizing section personnel as resources, and by completing assignments and tests.
Process, embed, cut and stain tissue sections (i.e. autopsy, surgical) under the direction of a histology technician or histotechnologist to practice techniques and assist with the workload by following section policies and procedures.
Prepare reagents, stains and solutions necessary for processing and staining by following section procedures.
Prepare antibodies and solutions necessary for processing and staining immunohistochemical slides by following section procedure.
Perform and record quality control and preventative maintenance procedures and notify histology technician, histotechnologist or team leader of variations promptly to assure instruments, stains, and procedures are operating within acceptable standards by following section policies and procedures.
Label slides and file slides and blocks per section policy.
Participate as a team member to facilitate the efficiency and effectiveness of the section utilizing interpersonal skills in communication, cooperation and assisting coworkers in all areas.
Accommodate patient and laboratory needs by professionally responding to requests for flexibility in duties and schedules.
