About The Position

This PRN position in Anatomic Pathology at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center focuses on embedding and microtomy. The role involves ensuring accurate and timely accessioning, labeling, and billing of specimens, as well as their processing and staining according to departmental practices. The technician will provide maximum care in identification procedures, perform special stains, and contribute to other Anatomic Pathology laboratory procedures. Continuous improvement of work skills through self-study and continuing education is expected. The role also emphasizes protecting oneself and others by following approved policies and procedures to prevent the spread of diseases and promoting the professional image of the laboratories.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree in applied science or high school diploma/GED with two years training as defined by the Board of Registry of the American Society of Clinical Pathologists and the National Society of Histotechnology.
  • Three years' experience in a clinical histology lab preferred.

Nice To Haves

  • HT (ASCP) certification preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Adheres to the general hospital standards to promote a cooperative work environment by utilizing communication skills, interpersonal relationships and team building.
  • Assures accurate and timely accessioning, labeling and billing of specimens, according to departmental practices.
  • Assures accurate and timely processing and staining of specimens, according to departmental practices.
  • Provides maximum care in identification procedures when processing patient specimens.
  • Performs special stains and/or enzyme histochemical stains.
  • Performs additional Anatomic Pathology Department laboratory procedures.
  • Improves work skills through self-study and continuing education.
  • Contributes to the smooth and efficient operation of the section and department.
  • Protects self, coworkers and facility by following approved policies and procedures to prevent the spread of bloodborne and/or airborne diseases.
  • Exhibits and promotes the professional image of laboratories in accordance with hospital, department, and professional society philosophies, goals and standards of laboratory testing.
