About The Position

The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) is seeking a Highway Maintenance Worker 1 (HMW1) or Highway Technician 1 (HT1) in Allen County. ODOT is responsible for building and maintaining Ohio's extensive highway system and is dedicated to providing safe and efficient roadways. This role is crucial for ensuring the smooth operation and upkeep of our infrastructure. The selected candidate will be placed in the classification for which they meet the minimum qualifications.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of addition and subtraction.
  • Knowledge of highway maintenance and traffic control safety practices.
  • Skill in operation of hand tools.
  • Skill in operation of motorized snow equipment.
  • Ability to recognize unusual or threatening conditions and take appropriate action.
  • Ability to read simple sentences.
  • Ability to cooperate with co-workers on group projects.
  • Ability to demonstrate strength to lift 50-100 pounds.
  • Formal education in arithmetic that includes addition & subtraction and in reading, writing & speaking common English vocabulary.
  • Valid commercial driver’s license (if involved in driving motorized snow and ice control equipment).
  • Must register as a driver in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse.
  • Must submit to urinalysis prior to appointment to test for illegal drug use.

Responsibilities

  • Flags and directs vehicular traffic through highway maintenance and construction sites.
  • Sets up and maintains traffic control structures such as barricades, pot torches, cones, pavement markings, and electrical warning devices.
  • Uses hand tools to perform road repairs, including repairing road shoulders, culverts, and berms, patching potholes, and smoothing tar in cracks.
  • Performs minor guardrail repair and rough painting.
  • Shovels snow and spreads salt for snow and ice control.
  • Performs general building, grounds, and equipment maintenance, including mowing, trimming shrubs, sweeping floors, washing windows, removing trash, raking leaves, and shoveling sidewalks.
  • Paints structures and cleans, paints, and refuels equipment.
  • Performs general maintenance and minor repairs of equipment, including fueling and cleaning.
  • Completes daily work records and logs.
  • Operates a 2-way radio.
  • Answers the telephone.
  • Rides "shot-gun" during snow and ice season.
  • Drives a truck with snowplow and spreader attachments to perform snow and ice control duties.
