About The Position

The Town of Essex is hiring a Highway Maintenance Foreman Class IV. This supervisory role combines skilled manual work and equipment operation with directing work crews on public works projects and snow and ice removal. The Foreman provides day-to-day oversight and guidance to up to eight full-time employees and several seasonal or temporary employees working on assigned jobs. The role involves frequent contact with other public works employees and the general public to respond to complaints and questions. Regular hours are 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, though hours may vary based on municipal needs. Overtime is required during the winter season. This is a full-time hourly position covered by the AFSCME union contract. The position is open until filled.

Requirements

Eight years of experience in highway maintenance, construction procedures and methods, equipment operation, and some leadership roles.
Three winter seasons of experience performing winter plowing with a heavy-duty dump truck equipped with a plow or wing.
Thorough working knowledge of the Federal Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).
At minimum, a valid Class B commercial driver's license.
The Town will consider any combination of education and experience that allows for successful performance in the role.
