About The Position

Springfield Public Schools is seeking a High School Vocational Teacher for Design & Visual Communications. This role involves teaching students across various vocational technical education framework strands, including Safety and Health, Technical Standards, Embedded Academics, Employability, Management and Entrepreneurship, and Technology. The primary goal is to help students develop into mature, capable, responsible, and productive citizens by imparting subject matter and skills. The teacher will be responsible for planning and delivering instruction, creating a conducive learning environment, assessing student progress, and maintaining accurate records. The position also involves collaborating with specialists, protecting students and school property, enforcing classroom conduct, supervising paraprofessionals, and engaging in professional growth and development. The teacher will also participate in district and building-level decision-making regarding budget, facilities, curriculum, and staff well-being.

Requirements

  • Associate degree or higher related to subject matter and skills to be taught.
  • Four years recent (within the last seven), full-time employment experience directly related to design and visual communications.
  • Passing score of at least 70% on the written and performance tests for licensure.
  • Passing score on the Vocational Technical Literacy (VTLST) and the Communication and Literacy Skills Test.
  • Design and Visual Communications (9-14) license requirements are expected to be completed as soon as possible from the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.

Responsibilities

  • Teach Vocational Technical Education Framework Strands: Safety and Health Knowledge, Technical Standards Knowledge and Skills, Embedded Academics, Employability, Management and Entrepreneurship, and Technology.
  • Help students learn subject matter and skills that contribute to their development as mature, able, responsible, and productive citizens.
  • Meet and instruct assigned classes in designated locations and times.
  • Plan a program of study that meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of students.
  • Create a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of students.
  • Guide the learning process toward the achievement of established district curriculum goals.
  • Establish and communicate clear objectives to students for all lessons, units, and projects.
  • Prepare for assigned classes and show written evidence of preparation upon request.
  • Employ a variety of instructional techniques and media, consistent with physical limitations and student needs.
  • Strive to implement the district’s philosophy of education, instructional goals, objectives, and performance expectations.
  • Assess student accomplishments regularly and provide progress reports.
  • Communicate with parents as deemed necessary.
  • Maintain accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulations.
  • Diagnose learning challenges of students and seek assistance from district specialists as needed.
  • Take necessary precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Follow the SPS code of conduct for the classroom and enforce rules of classroom behavior fairly.
  • Plan and supervise assignments for paraprofessionals and make written evaluations.
  • Maintain an ongoing program of professional growth that satisfies district requirements and personal expectations.
  • Take an active part in the teacher evaluation process.
  • Attend building and district meetings to promote communication and mutual decision-making.
  • Attend established traditional school-sponsored activities.
  • Contribute to decisions made by the district and building regarding budget, facilities, curriculum, and personal well-being.
  • Strive to maintain and improve professional competence.
