About The Position

The High School Jazz Ensemble is designed for 9th through 12th Grade students who play band instruments (ex. Flute, Clarinet, Bass Clarinet, Alto/Tenor Saxophone, Trumpet, Trombone, Baritone, etc.), piano, guitar, bass guitar, or drum set at a proficient or higher level. The ensemble is designed for students to study jazz music theory, jazz playing styles, and to perform standard jazz literature. Students participating in the band program have the opportunity to excel artistically in an ensemble setting and individually by developing the skills to be confident and empathetic musicians.

Requirements

  • K-12 Music Certification
  • Ability to teach high school level instrumental jazz music
  • Ability to conduct high school jazz ensemble
  • A desire to work with high school students
  • Excellent organizational skills

Nice To Haves

  • Proficient or higher level playing ability on band instruments, piano, guitar, bass guitar, or drum set
  • Develop an appreciation for instrumental jazz music in students
  • Teach students jazz music theory and standard jazz repertoire
  • Produce and conduct a quality jazz performance as part of the Winter Concert and Spring Band Concerts and any other public performances
  • Promote and prepare students to audition for PMEA Honors Jazz festival and any other honors jazz events and/or festivals

Responsibilities

  • Organize a 9th through 12th grade jazz ensemble of interested students
  • Provide opportunities for leadership and improvisation within the ensemble
  • Be available for after school rehearsals
  • Perform in annual High School Winter Concert and Spring Band Concert to showcase the group
  • Seek opportunities to showcase the jazz ensemble
  • Submit yearly goals at the start of the school year and submit summary of goals in an end of the year report
