About The Position

Michels Canada is a nationally recognized general contractor in energy, infrastructure and power construction based in Nisku, Alberta, with offices in British Columbia and Ontario. Reporting to the Maintenance & Shop Supervisor, the 2nd / 3rd year Heavy Equipment Technician Apprentice is responsible for assisting with the inspection, maintenance, diagnosis, and repair of heavy equipment and commercial vehicles while progressing through their apprenticeship program. The successful candidate will work under the guidance of experienced technicians to develop technical skills and gain practical experience in mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems. Critical for success is a commitment to safety, a strong willingness to learn, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

Requirements

  • Previous experience performing maintenance and repairs on heavy equipment, trucks, trailers, excavators, dozers, and other support equipment is considered an asset.
  • Basic knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, and preventative maintenance practices.
  • Basic computer proficiency.
  • Ability to move and operate equipment.
  • Have a strong awareness and attitude towards workplace health and safety.
  • Strong interpersonal and communications skills, both written and verbal.
  • Valid driver's license for the type(s) of vehicles driven with an acceptable driving record as determined by the Michels Review Team.

Responsibilities

  • Maintaining and promoting a strong safety culture for all employees, vendors, and customers and following all safety policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Identifying and communicating workplace hazards and correcting or seeking assistance in correcting unsafe actions or conditions.
  • Assist in performing preventative maintenance and inspections on heavy equipment, trucks, trailers, and support equipment in accordance with Michels Canada equipment policies.
  • Support Journeyperson Heavy Duty Technicians in diagnosing, troubleshooting, and repairing mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems.
  • Assist with the removal, installation, repair, and replacement of parts and components.
  • Utilize diagnostic tools, including multimeters and computer software, to support fault identification and repair activities under supervision.
  • Accurately record maintenance and repair activities in Fleet Software.
  • Maintain shop tools and equipment and assist with ensuring the efficient operation of the maintenance facility.
  • Complete daily housekeeping and maintain a clean and organized work area.
  • Participate in apprenticeship training and actively pursue progression toward Journeyperson certification.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
