About The Position

The City of Greensboro’s Solid Waste and Recycling Department is seeking a dependable Heavy Equipment Operator assigned to the Residential section. The role supports residential solid waste collection services and helps keep neighborhoods clean through reliable, timely collection operations. The operator primarily operates automated collection vehicles and knuckle boom collection vehicles, and may assist with yard waste, bulk item, and other residential collection assignments. Employees navigate City streets independently, work with collection crews and supervisors, and perform assigned duties independently under limited supervision while meeting productivity and service expectations. The position also supports emergency operations, including snow response, tornado recovery, and other weather-related emergencies, sometimes with little or no advance notice. Work is outdoors in all weather conditions and involves frequent physical activity, including standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, walking, prolonged sitting, climbing, shoveling, and consistently lifting up to 50 pounds. Employees must maintain hand-eye coordination and the physical ability to perform duties safely. Flexible scheduling may be required, including weekends and holidays, and employees must maintain a reliable means of contact for emergency situations and call-back duties. The position is classified as non-exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act.

Requirements

High school diploma or GED and at least 1 year of experience operating CDL-related vehicles, or no high school diploma/GED and at least 4 years of experience operating CDL-related vehicles.
Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License; the position also requires maintaining a valid, unrestricted Class B CDL.
Successfully complete Smith System Defensive Driving Certification within six months of hire.
Maintain a reliable home or cellular telephone for operational communication and emergency response.
Demonstrate a positive attitude, good attendance, and willingness to assist wherever needed.
Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions and perform frequent physical activity, including standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, walking, prolonged sitting, climbing, shoveling, and consistently lifting up to 50 pounds.
Maintain hand-eye coordination and the physical ability to safely perform assigned duties.
Strong communication, navigation, and organizational skills; ability to work independently, maintain accurate records, and provide professional customer service.
Flexible scheduling may be required, including weekends and holidays, with little or no advance notice; emergency call-back availability is required.

Nice To Haves

Solid Waste industry experience.
Forklift Operator’s License if operating a forklift.

Responsibilities

Operate automated collection vehicles, with an expected daily collection of approximately 1,000 automated containers.
Operate knuckle boom collection vehicles and assist with other residential collection assignments as needed.
Support rear-loader collection operations involving yard waste and bulk items.
Independently locate collection routes and service addresses using street guides and City maps.
Use two-way radios to communicate with supervisors, coworkers, and other operational personnel.
Complete daily survey forms, vehicle inspection forms, and other required documentation.
Work closely with Solid Waste supervisors and assist other crews as operational needs require.
Perform assigned duties independently under limited supervision while maintaining productivity and service expectations.
Support emergency operations, including snow response, tornado recovery, and other weather-related emergencies.
Provide professional customer service and contribute to dependable residential collection services.
