About The Position

The Healthcare Administrative Fellowship is a collaborative, immersive two-year leadership program for recent graduates of MHA, MBA, MPH, and related programs beginning careers in healthcare administration. Under the mentorship of the Chief of Staff to the Health System and the Chief of Human Resources, the fellow develops skills and experience for a career in healthcare leadership while working closely with Keck Medicine of USC executives. The fellow contributes to and eventually leads operational, strategic, quality, patient experience, and financial initiatives across inpatient and outpatient settings. The first year includes rotations through functions such as strategy, human resources, finance, USC Care Medical Group and ambulatory operations, Keck Medical Center operations, and community hospital operations. The second year includes a focused leadership assignment or “deep dive” into an area of interest aligned with organizational priorities and needs. The fellow also participates in executive-led projects, leadership development and continuous improvement programs, executive meetings, and high-level discussions and committees. The fellowship is intended to prepare fellows for healthcare leadership through hands-on exposure to health system administration, organizational project work, leadership development, direct learning from executives, and an area-specific leadership assignment. Fellows shadow executives, attend meetings, conduct “gemba” visits, learn about goals and performance indicators, and receive guidance and mentorship from executive and senior leaders. Development activities include the KMUSC Leadership Development Program and the Keck Academy for Continuous Improvement, including completion of an A3 improvement project. The position partners with executives on project plans and budgets, supports strategic decisions and project execution, prepares administrative reports, analyzes financial and hospital data, and assists with follow-up and accountability for executive meeting action items. The role also requires maintaining applicable policies, procedures, quality and safety standards, and relevant California Department of Public Health standards. The fellow may perform other duties as assigned or requested.
