About The Position

Shriners Children’s is seeking a part-time Health Unit Coordinator to join their Portland, OR team. This role provides clerical and office support in an inpatient setting, reporting to Nursing leadership. The Health Unit Coordinator is responsible for managing communications, patient registration, maintaining patient information (both paper and electronic), transporting specimens, and ordering necessary supplies, medications, and blood products. The position emphasizes fostering a family-centered care environment, maintaining professional boundaries, and supporting interdisciplinary staff in delivering expert clinical care. Key responsibilities include completing admission and discharge paperwork according to policy and demonstrating effective communication skills with patients, families, visitors, and staff.

Requirements

  • 1 year Transcription, medical terminology, office organizational skills
  • 1 year Computer applications, typing, general office skills
  • Basic Life Support (BLS)

Nice To Haves

  • 3 years' experience as Unit Clerk/Unit Secretary/Health Unit Coordinator
  • 3 years experience Electronic Medical Record
  • Bilingual in Spanish

Responsibilities

  • Provides clerical and office support in the inpatient setting.
  • Answers phones and directs communications.
  • Registers patients in the computer.
  • Maintains patient information (paper and computerized).
  • Transports specimens.
  • Procures needed supplies, medications, and blood products.
  • Seeks to provide an environment conducive to family centered care.
  • Is aware of patient/parent and staff boundary issues.
  • Supports the professional interdisciplinary staff in their role to provide expert clinical care to patients.
  • Completes all paperwork for admissions and discharges according to policy and procedure.
  • Demonstrates appropriate verbal and non-verbal communication skills when dealing with patients, families, visitors and other staff.
