About The Position

Shriners Children’s is seeking a part-time Health Unit Coordinator to join their Portland, OR team. This role provides clerical and office support in an inpatient setting, reporting to Nursing leadership. The Health Unit Coordinator is responsible for managing communications, patient registration, maintaining patient information (both paper and electronic), transporting specimens, and ordering necessary supplies, medications, and blood products. The position emphasizes creating an environment supportive of family-centered care, respecting professional boundaries, and supporting interdisciplinary staff in providing expert clinical care. Key responsibilities include completing admission and discharge paperwork accurately and demonstrating effective communication skills with patients, families, visitors, and staff.

Requirements

1 year Transcription, medical terminology, office organizational skills
1 year Computer applications, typing, general office skills
Basic Life Support (BLS)

Nice To Haves

3 years' experience as Unit Clerk/Unit Secretary/Health Unit Coordinator
3 years experience Electronic Medical Record
Bilingual in Spanish

Responsibilities

Answering phones and directing communications
Registering patients in the computer
Maintaining patient information (paper and computerized)

Procuring needed supplies, medications, and blood products
Completing all paperwork for admissions and discharges according to policy and procedure
Demonstrating appropriate verbal and non-verbal communication skills when dealing with patients, families, visitors and other staff
