About The Position

The Emergency Department Health Unit Coordinator is responsible for pre-registering patients into the health information system by obtaining appropriate information from Emergency Medical Services (EMS) to process complete demographic and other visit related information. Responsibilities also include interacting with patients, patient family members/visitors, providers, and other team members.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Must possess written and verbal communication skills.
  • HIPAA – appropriately manages Protected Health Information (PHI).
  • Able to meet physical and mental requirements of position in fast-paced, complex acute care setting.
  • Annual education and competencies as required per hospital certifications

Nice To Haves

  • 1-year previous experience in customer service.
  • 1-year previous experience in general clerical office or administrative duties experience or applicable classwork may be substituted.

Responsibilities

  • Pre-registering patients into the health information system by obtaining appropriate information from Emergency Medical Services (EMS) to process complete demographic and other visit related information.
  • Interacting with patients, patient family members/visitors, providers, and other team members.
  • Capturing and entering accurate patient demographic via direct interaction with EMS.
  • Appropriately identifying each patient using two identifiers.
  • Obtaining registration information including armband and ensuring ED staff receive.
  • Requesting records from other facilities.
  • Reviewing physician orders for services.
  • Consulting hospitalist, resource clinician, Valley Community Services Board, social work, or a different specific group of physicians as needed for the Emergency Department provider.
  • Registering DOA accounts for nursing supervisor and legal blood alcohol accounts as needed.
  • Printing nursing forms/patient packets when requested.
  • Running discharge report daily to ensure that all accounts are discharged appropriately.
  • Effectively communicating with nursing staff using Vocera.
  • Understanding downtime process for entering orders/tests.
  • Answering calls in a timely fashion, placing calls on hold, not leaving calls unanswered.
  • Organizing and managing time effectively to optimize productivity.
  • Meeting departmental goals in accordance with performance standards, policy and procedures.
  • Accepting change in a positive manner with positive results.
  • Communicating the requests of patients, family members, and hospital personnel using appropriate channels.
  • Demonstrating a positive, professional image of caring and concern for patients, family and all other internal and external customers.
  • Maintaining composure in difficult situations.
  • Exercising good judgment to resolve patient concerns and/or referring issues to department supervisor/manager.
  • Answering patient call bell as needed and notifying care team.
  • Entering call back reminders.
  • Entering IT, Maintenance, and Biomed repair requests as needed.
