About The Position

The Emergency Department team at Banner Estrella Medical Center is seeking a new Health Unit Coordinator. This position is responsible for a variety of administrative support functions and customer service for an assigned patient care area, promoting an organized and efficient delivery of care to patients. The role facilitates communication between physicians and nurses, calls in consults, and acts as a liaison with all other internal departments and external contacts. This is a full-time day shift position, working three 12-hour shifts per week from 6:00 AM to 6:30 PM, including weekends and holidays on a rotating basis. The position offers the opportunity to utilize a self-scheduling tool and includes a flat rate of $1/hour for weekend shifts and an 18% differential for night shifts.

Requirements

  • High school diploma/GED or equivalent working knowledge.
  • 1 year of medical clerical experience; preferably in a hospital or physician office setting, or prior experience in customer service.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Effective human relations and communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Computer literacy is required.
  • Knowledge of commonly used office software.
  • Keyboarding skills.
  • Employees working at Banner Behavioral Health Hospital, BTMC Behavioral, and BUMG, BUMCT, or BUMCS in a Behavioral Health clinical setting that serves children must possess an Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card at the time of hire and maintain the card for the duration of their employment.
  • An Arizona Criminal History Affidavit must be signed upon hire.

Responsibilities

  • Performs receptionist/clerical duties to support overall operating efficiency and effective flow of communication and information throughout the department.
  • Participates in the resolution of customer problems or collects necessary data and follows through to the appropriate person for problem resolution.
  • Processes patient admissions, records bed assignments in the system, makes face sheets, and prints patient labels upon admission.
  • Orders outside records from other facilities and Physician’s offices.
  • Maintains a complete patient record with admission, transfer, and discharge information, progress notes, and consent forms.
  • Ensures that all reports and chart forms are scanned or filed into the patient’s record.
  • Ensures that charting forms are labeled and accessible if they are needed.
  • Maintains adequate supplies of frequently used patient education materials.
  • May be responsible for QC/validations.
  • Enters pending discharges into the system.
  • Coordinates patient appointments for procedures and treatments that may be required prior to timely discharge.
  • Processes patient discharges.
  • Maintains adequate levels of office, dietary, and medical supplies and completes requisition forms when supplies need to be ordered.
  • Reconciles supply orders upon delivery.
  • Monitors and tracks the use and whereabouts of electronic equipment such as patient ID scanners and lap top computers.
  • Ensures that all equipment is accounted for and in working order.
  • Works under local supervision and has responsibility for the assigned unit only.
  • Interacts with other health unit secretaries and other staff at all levels throughout the facility.
  • Interacts with patients, families, physicians, unit staff, case managers, patient service staff, and medical records staff.
  • Interacts with a wide variety of external customers.
