About The Position

The Health & Safety Coordinator will report to the Health and Safety Supervisor and play a key role in the Health and Safety team. This position will assist in developing, implementing, and overseeing on-site health and safety policies, programs, and initiatives for the Keno Hill operation. The Keno Hill mine, located within the Keno Hill Silver District in Canada’s Yukon Territory, is one of the highest-grade silver districts in the world. It comprises 242 square kilometres (km2) with numerous mineral deposits and more than 35 historical past-producing mine sites. Keno Hill is expected to produce ~3.0 million ounces of silver in 2026. The mine is owned and operated by Hecla Mining Company, headquartered in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. Established in 1891, Hecla has a rich history as a distinguished and respected precious metals producer. Winner of numerous safety and environmental awards, Keno Hill is seeking new team members committed to professional growth and success.

Requirements

  • 1-5 years of experience working in the mining industry.
  • Knowledge of OHS legislation is a requirement.
  • Highly organized with exceptional attention to detail and ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced growing work environment.
  • Proven communication skills and ability to work effectively with a wide range of individuals and groups.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite – Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Pre-Employment Testing (drug & alcohol, blood lead, and audiogram)
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License
  • Clean Driver’s Abstract

Nice To Haves

  • Underground Mine Rescue experience is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Track and report Health and Safety Key Performance Indicators.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of Health and Safety System Processes.
  • Workplace inspections and auditing critical risk controls.
  • Participate in development and implementation of the health and safety training program.
  • Conduct Site Orientations.
  • Maintain adequate training records of all training conducted.
  • Participate in the development of standard operating procedures and safety standards.
  • Participate in job hazard analysis and coach employees on hazard assessment and control.
  • Develop toolbox topics and participate in weekly safety meetings.
  • Lead and participate in Mine Rescue Training Program.
  • Participate in the development of emergency response procedures.
  • Provide strong safety leadership to the operation and work as part of the Health and Safety Team to improve the safety systems and culture.
  • Other duties may be assigned.
  • Help to promote a strong environmental culture, promoting and teaching environmentally friendly values and work practices.
  • Help to foster a strong safety culture, promoting and exemplifying safe work practices throughout the organization.

  • Ensuring the safety and health of themselves and others in the workplace by being responsible for their actions and taking due care while performing their work.
  • Following all environmental requirements and maintaining integrity to ensure environmental compliance.
  • Ensuring all spills are reported in accordance with spill reporting procedures.
  • Identifying, eliminating, and reporting hazards as soon as practicable.
  • Reporting incidents and accidents as soon as practicable.
  • Disclosing all information regarding incidents and cooperating in incident investigations.
  • Assisting in the resolution of health and safety matters in a positive and timely manner.
  • Using and maintaining PPE.
  • Providing suggestions for improving work processes.
  • Assisting Management by supporting change to achieve desired targets.
  • Ensuring that plant and equipment operate within their safe working limits.
  • Ensuring that correct equipment is used for the job.
  • Participating in risk assessment methodology.
  • Participating in safety initiatives.
  • Receiving training and instruction as required.
  • Maintaining good housekeeping standards.
