This position is responsible for organizing, conducting, and evaluating daily practices for the Head Varsity Girls Basketball team. The coach will also maintain inventory and conduct periodic safety checks of equipment, supplies, and facilities. Supervision of locker rooms and facilities until all students leave is required. The coach will assure necessary medical attention while working with the Trainer on prevention and rehabilitation programs. Determining the needs of the program for budgeting, attending necessary conference meetings, and attending all required Iowa High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) and/or Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union (IGHSAU) meetings and submission of all required paperwork are also key responsibilities. The coach is encouraged to arrange the end of season banquet and conduct scouting if warranted. Assisting the Booster Club with specific needs for the activity and conducting staff meetings as needed are also part of the role. Checking academic progress and eligibility of participants according to Marion Independent Schools, the IHSAA and/or IGHSAU rules and regulations is crucial. The coach must establish and enforce all regulations of Marion Independent Schools, the IHSAA and/or the IGHSAU, including informing participants of these policies (Good Conduct, transportation regulations, etc.). Promoting the activity through announcements, newsletters, etc., and conducting oneself in a sportsmanlike manner while modeling and promoting the high ideals of sportsmanship with staff and team are essential. Communication throughout the year with the Activities Director regarding program development, staff, and team is required. Providing leadership and program development for a sequential 7-12 program in the activity and promoting the sport within youth programs are encouraged. Informing participants of lettering and special award criteria and informing the Activities Office which athletes receive these awards are also duties. Aiding the Activities Director in establishing a schedule and continuous development, improvement, and evaluation of Assistant Coaches (9-12) are expected. Attending clinics and reading literature to stay abreast of changes in the activity is necessary. Supplying the Activities Director with forms, team information, season summary, and statistics is required for effective department operation. Acting as the historian for the sport, collecting and updating individual and team records, and communicating with administration, faculty, Activities Director, parents, students, and staff members in an effort to have an effective and efficient Activities Department are key. The coach must model the highest level of integrity and ethical behavior, know the rules of the sport, develop philosophies that guide program development, and assist in establishing goals for the program, team, and individuals, developing strategies to achieve them. The coach should work hard, be positive, and be on time.
