About The Position

The Head Varsity Boys Basketball Coach is responsible for all aspects of the program, subject to approval by the Athletic Director. The coach must exhibit strong leadership in developing players and staff, fostering sportsmanship, integrity, and character. Qualified candidates will possess excellent communication and organizational abilities, along with a deep understanding of basketball skills and strategies relevant to interscholastic athletics in Virginia.

Requirements

Strong leadership in player and staff development, sportsmanship, integrity, and character development.
Strong communication and organizational skills.
Exceptional knowledge of the skills and strategies of the sport of basketball as it pertains to interscholastic athletics in Virginia.
Demonstrate current knowledge of strength and conditioning programs for basketball.
Strong knowledge of VHSL rules.
Ensure all athletes have valid medical examinations and other required qualifications before they are allowed to participate.
Assist the athletic director to ensure that lists of all players eligible for athletic contests are prepared and maintained under rules of the VHSL.

Responsibilities

Foster an appreciation for the values of athletics, a drive for peak performance, good sportsmanship, and pride in self, team, school, and community among participants and spectators.
Support the training, conditioning, and performance of the basketball program, demonstrating current knowledge of strength and conditioning programs for basketball.
Execute off-season strength and conditioning programs within VHSL regulations.
Emphasize academic excellence and assist in monitoring and maintaining high academic standards for basketball program members.
Become actively involved in the college recruiting process for team members.
Demonstrate a strong knowledge of VHSL rules.
Promote the program within the school and community.
Work cooperatively with other athletic coaches to ensure a well-balanced athletic program.
Collaborate with assistant coaches, middle school coaches, youth coaches, and the Athletic Director to prepare team schedules.
Recommend necessary equipment and supplies to the athletic director for the basketball program.
Manage the inventory and care of equipment.
Ensure all athletes have valid medical examinations and meet other required qualifications before participation.
Assist the athletic director in preparing and maintaining lists of eligible players for athletic contests according to VHSL rules.
Recommend students for Varsity Letters or Service Bars to the athletic director.
Engage with parents of basketball program members positively and constructively.
Develop relationships with local middle school athletes and establish a presence with future athletes through summer camps and coaching clinics in collaboration with the wrestling community and athletic director.
Perform other duties related to the athletic coach position as requested by the high school principal and/or athletic director.
