About The Position

The Varsity Assistant Boys Basketball Coach at Heritage Christian School (HCS) is responsible for interacting directly with student-athletes, coaches, and parents, serving as a representative of HCS Athletics. The objective is to be a visible platform for Christian character, leading student-athletes toward righteousness in all aspects of life, particularly in their athletic development. The coach is committed to fostering an environment of encouragement, teamwork, and excellence, avoiding criticism, individualism, or perfectionism. While the teams aim to win, the primary goal is to glorify God. The employee must be a Christian with a genuine relationship with Jesus Christ, agreeing to the HCS Statement of Faith, Charter of Core Values, and Employee Covenant in both professional conduct and personal lifestyle. This role requires incorporating these qualities and standards into Christian education, demonstrating enthusiasm, courtesy, flexibility, integrity, gratitude, kindness, self-control, perseverance, and punctuality. The coach must handle athletic competition stress with emotional stability and positive actions, establishing and maintaining excellent working relationships with the HCS community, including faculty, staff, Board members, parents, and volunteers.

Requirements

  • Must be a Christian with an authentic and mature personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
  • Must agree to the HCS Statement of Faith, Charter of Core Values and Employee Covenant in both professional conduct and personal lifestyle.
  • Prior coaching experience at the high school or collegiate level required.
  • Demonstrate the character qualities of enthusiasm, courtesy, flexibility, integrity, gratitude, kindness, self-control, perseverance and punctuality.
  • Meet the stress of athletic competition with emotional stability and positive words/actions.
  • Establish and maintain excellent working relationships, representing Christ and HCS professionally and positively with the HCS community-at-large, including faculty and staff, Board members, parents, volunteers and others.
  • Must be able to meet the physical requirements of the position.
  • Must be able to use a computer and other audio-visual equipment.
  • Must be able to communicate with others.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • The employee must be able to hear low-volume sounds.
  • Must be able to assist children for health and safety reasons.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience as a varsity head coach preferred.
  • Previous managerial experience is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Advise and give direction to lower level squads in areas such as fundamentals, drills, patterns, offenses, defenses, conditioning, and coaching techniques.
  • Commit to executing a strength and conditioning program for the team, providing accountability and developing buy-in.
  • Monitor and enforce compliance with IHSAA rules and regulations.
  • Instruct student-athletes in the fundamental skills, strategy, and physical training necessary for individual and team success, adhering to the Heritage Christian Athletic Handbook.
  • Teach athletes to perform sound, safe fundamental techniques of the sport.
  • Uphold team expectations and provide accountability to student-athletes.
  • Promote and encourage the success of all other programs, emphasizing the need to share multi-sport athletes and collaborate with students, parents, and staff to balance academic and athletic investments.
  • Provide supervision of the gym/field/etc. at all times when athletes are present and secure facilities when done.
  • Coach from a Biblical perspective and strive to be a true reflection of Jesus Christ to athletes.
  • Set an example of the importance of church attendance, prayer, and Bible study.
  • Create a winning environment by displaying a positive attitude and providing daily encouragement, helping to build strong relationships.
  • Follow the Matthew 18 principle in dealing with students, parents, administration, and staff.
  • Support the Administration in carrying out the mission of the school.
  • Recognize that parents are primarily responsible before God for their child and partner with them.
  • Encourage students to accept God’s gift of salvation and grow in their faith.
  • Emphasize to students the reality of their own self-worth in Christ.
  • Promote honesty, integrity, humility, loyalty, unity, and encourage the total character development of athletes.
  • Perform additional duties and responsibilities as outlined in the Coaches Handbook or assigned by administration.
