About The Position

Monroe High School is seeking a qualified and motivated individual to serve as the Varsity Boys Basketball Head Coach. The successful candidate will provide leadership and direction for the boys basketball program while promoting athletic excellence, academic achievement, sportsmanship, character development, and a positive team culture. The Varsity Head Coach is responsible for the overall operation and development of the boys basketball program and is expected to work collaboratively with student-athletes, coaching staff, school administration, the Athletic Department, families, and other district employees.

Requirements

  • Previous basketball coaching experience is highly preferred.
  • Varsity-level coaching experience is preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of basketball fundamentals, strategies, rules, techniques, and player development.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize, plan, and effectively manage practices, competitions, team activities, and the overall basketball program.
  • Ability to develop, lead, and work effectively with an assistant coaching staff.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills with the ability to motivate and develop student-athletes.
  • Demonstrated ability to build a competitive program while maintaining appropriate sportsmanship and professional conduct among coaches, student-athletes, and the program's fan base.
  • Knowledge of and willingness to follow and enforce all Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) rules, Monroe Public Schools policies, Athletic Department expectations, and applicable codes of conduct.
  • Commitment to maintaining high expectations for the academic achievement, attendance, behavior, and eligibility of all student-athletes.
  • Ability to establish positive and professional relationships with students, parents/guardians, administrators, teachers, coaches, officials, and other district employees.
  • Ability to represent Monroe High School and Monroe Public Schools in a positive and professional manner.

Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership, supervision, and direction for the Monroe High School boys basketball program.
  • Plan and conduct organized, purposeful, and developmentally appropriate practices.
  • Teach basketball fundamentals, techniques, strategies, teamwork, and game preparation.
  • Develop student-athletes at both the individual and team levels while maintaining appropriate expectations for effort, discipline, and conduct.
  • Select, organize, supervise, and provide direction to assistant coaches in collaboration with the Athletic Department and District administration.
  • Promote consistency and continuity throughout the boys basketball program and support the development of student-athletes at all levels.
  • Establish and communicate clear expectations for student-athletes regarding attendance, academics, behavior, sportsmanship, practices, competitions, and team responsibilities.
  • Monitor student-athlete academic performance and eligibility and reinforce the expectation that academics remain a priority.
  • Promote an environment that emphasizes teamwork, accountability, respect, discipline, character, and good sportsmanship.
  • Ensure that coaches and student-athletes comply with all MHSAA regulations, District policies, Athletic Department procedures, and applicable codes of conduct.
  • Maintain appropriate communication with student-athletes, families, school administration, and the Athletic Department.
  • Work cooperatively and professionally with other coaches, administrators, teachers, maintenance/custodial staff, officials, and other individuals involved in the athletic program.
  • Properly supervise student-athletes during practices, competitions, travel, and other team activities.
  • Assist with the proper care, inventory, distribution, collection, and storage of uniforms, equipment, and supplies.
  • Support appropriate fundraising, program activities, and community engagement as approved by the Athletic Department and District.
  • Model professional behavior and appropriate sportsmanship at all times and hold coaching staff and student-athletes to the same standard.
  • Perform other duties related to the boys basketball program as assigned by the Athletic Director or District administration.
