About The Position

This role is for a Head of Small Commercial, also known as a P&L Owner, with the mission to own the full financial and strategic performance of the Small Commercial business. The goal is to balance growth, underwriting profitability, and capital efficiency while building a scalable, market-leading franchise. Initially, this leader will operate in a matrixed capacity, influencing strategy and execution across underwriting, pricing, claims, and distribution. Subsequently, they will design, justify, and establish a dedicated operating model and team to accelerate performance. The role evolves through three phases: Phase 1 (0-6 months) focuses on diagnosis, alignment, and shaping strategy through influence, establishing P&L visibility, diagnosing portfolio health, evaluating capabilities, and building a strategy blueprint. Phase 2 (6-18 months) involves building and proving capabilities, executing the investment roadmap, demonstrating measurable improvements, and formalizing P&L ownership mechanisms. Phase 3 (18+ months) focuses on scaling and owning the business, building and leading a dedicated Small Commercial organization, optimizing capital deployment, and delivering sustained outperformance.

Responsibilities

  • Own Small Commercial P&L: GWP, Earned Premium, Loss Ratio, Expense Ratio, Combined Ratio
  • Manage growth, retention, mix/segmentation
  • Set and refine appetite by class, size, industry, geography, channel
  • Drive rate adequacy and pricing sophistication with actuarial
  • Actively manage concentration risk, cat exposure, and litigation-prone segments
  • Define and outperform annual business plan
  • Partner with Ops/IT to build a fit-for-purpose small commercial engine (STP, simplified workflows, pre-bind rules)
  • Improve cycle times, responsiveness, data capture quality
  • Monitor NPS/CSAT, referral SLAs, ease-of-doing-business
  • Partner closely with Claims to understand severity drivers, emerging trends, reduce leakage, and improve outcomes
  • Embed claims insights into pricing, appetite, and underwriting rules
  • Assess talent across underwriting, product, and analytics
  • Define hiring plan and capability requirements
  • Justify ROI of organizational build-out
  • Lead Small Commercial team: Product/Portfolio Leads, Underwriting leaders/teams, Analytics
  • Build a culture of ownership, data-driven decision-making, speed, and discipline
  • Influence appetite, pricing, and underwriting decisions (Early/Matrix Authority)
  • Recommend investment priorities and drive alignment across functions
  • Co-own appetite, pricing direction, and underwriting frameworks (Mid/Shared Authority)
  • Hold formal role in governance committees
  • Have final decision on appetite, segmentation, product roadmap, underwriting framework (Late/Full P&L Authority)
  • Direct control over dedicated small commercial resources
