About The Position

This leader will own the full financial and strategic performance of the Small Commercial business, balancing growth, underwriting profitability, and capital efficiency while building a scalable, market-leading franchise over time. Initially, this leader will operate as a matrixed business owner, shaping strategy and execution across underwriting, pricing, claims, and distribution. Subsequently, they will design, justify, and establish a dedicated operating model and team to accelerate performance. The role evolves through three phases: Phase 1 (0-6 months) focuses on diagnosis, alignment, and shaping strategy; Phase 2 (6-18 months) involves building capabilities and demonstrating measurable improvement; and Phase 3 (18+ months) centers on scaling and full organizational ownership with a dedicated reporting structure.

  • Build and socialize the Small Commercial Strategy & Operating Model Blueprint.
  • Begin influencing appetite clarity, pricing, and distribution focus.
  • Execute the approved investment roadmap, including talent acquisition, pricing/segmentation improvements, and workflow enhancements.
  • Begin formalizing P&L ownership mechanisms.
  • Deliver early wins such as improved loss ratio and increased quote-to-bind.
  • Establish underwriting guidelines, authority, producer segmentation, and a claims feedback loop.
  • Start building a dedicated small commercial identity internally and externally.
  • Build and lead a dedicated Small Commercial organization, including Product/Portfolio Management, Underwriting teams, Analytics/pricing partnership, and dedicated operations alignment.
  • Assume formal authority over underwriting execution for the segment.
  • Mature capabilities in advanced segmentation, pricing sophistication, automated underwriting, and digital distribution.
  • Optimize capital deployment through reinsurance usage, mix management, and expansion.
  • Deliver sustained outperformance versus plan and market.
  • Own Small Commercial P&L, including GWP, Earned Premium, Loss Ratio, Expense Ratio, and Combined Ratio.
  • Manage growth, retention, and mix/segmentation.
  • Set and refine appetite by class, size, industry, geography, and channel.
  • Drive rate adequacy and pricing sophistication with actuarial.
  • Actively manage concentration risk, cat exposure, and litigation-prone segments.
  • Define and outperform the annual business plan.
  • Partner with Operations/IT to build a fit-for-purpose small commercial engine, focusing on STP, simplified workflows, and pre-bind controls.
  • Improve cycle times, responsiveness, data capture quality, NPS/CSAT, referral SLAs, and ease-of-doing-business.
  • Partner closely with Claims to understand severity drivers, emerging trends, and reduce leakage.
  • Embed claims insights into pricing, appetite, and underwriting rules.
  • Assess talent across underwriting, product, and analytics.
  • Define hiring plans and capability requirements.
  • Justify ROI of organizational build-out.
  • Lead the Small Commercial team, including Product/Portfolio Leads, Underwriting leaders/teams, and Analytics.
  • Build a culture of ownership, data-driven decision-making, speed, and discipline.
  • Influence appetite, pricing, and underwriting decisions in the matrixed phase.
  • Recommend investment priorities and drive alignment across functions.
  • Co-own appetite, pricing direction, and underwriting frameworks in the shared authority phase.
  • Hold a formal role in governance committees.
  • Make final decisions on appetite, segmentation, product roadmap, and underwriting framework in the full P&L authority phase.
  • Have direct control over dedicated small commercial resources.
