Head of Sales Engineering

Assembled•San Francisco, CA
•$200,000 - $256,000•Onsite

About The Position

Assembled is hiring its founding sales engineering leader to own the technical side of winning deals while building and scaling the sales engineering function. The role begins hands-on, leading technical evaluations and strategic deals alongside Account Executives, with an initial sales engineer and authorization to hire more. The leader will remain involved in deal execution and carry a reduced quota while establishing the function’s processes, resources, and team. The position focuses substantially on demonstrating Assembled’s AI agents for chat, voice, and email, including how they resolve customer issues within existing support systems and work alongside human support teams. The role also spans Assembled’s workforce products and requires translating complex support operations challenges into clear technical solutions and demonstrated value using customers’ data and workflows. The Head of Sales Engineering will serve as a trusted technical partner to prospects and a connection between customer needs and product development. The role is cross-functional, involves exposure to executive leadership, and is based in person five days a week at either the San Francisco or New York office.

Requirements

  • Significant technical and pre-sales experience, with analytical range and strong critical-thinking skills to reason across a broad product.
  • Experience leading the technical side of complex enterprise sales cycles and winning deals with at least $500K in upfront value; this is a stated hard requirement.
  • Experience standing up or scaling a sales engineering team from scratch.
  • Experience managing or mentoring sales engineers, while remaining willing to carry a number and participate directly in deals.
  • Ability to work with urgency, manage competing deals, pursue value delivery, overcome roadblocks in unstructured environments, and operate independently.
  • Ability to connect prospect and market trends to go-to-market and product strategy.
  • Ability to coach and give direct feedback to sales engineers and account executives, while being collaborative, humble, and receptive to feedback.

Nice To Haves

  • Five or more years in sales engineering, solutions consulting, or a comparable technical pre-sales role.
  • Hands-on experience selling or deploying AI agents across chat, voice, or email.
  • Background in Workforce Management or Support Operations.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and grow the sales engineering team by hiring, coaching, and developing sales engineers, and defining function metrics such as technical win rate, proof-of-concept conversion, and time-to-value.
  • Partner with Account Executives to drive technical evaluations from discovery through proof of concept to close, and personally lead the largest and most strategic deals, especially initially.
  • Build scalable foundations for the function, including demo environments, discovery frameworks, proof-of-concept playbooks, and reusable technical content.
  • Own the technical win end to end: understand customer business context and goals, propose appropriate solutions across AI agents and workforce products, run tailored demonstrations, and prove value using real data and workflows.
  • Own RFP and security assessment responses and build repeatable processes and content for them.
  • Bring customer evidence to the product team to inform the roadmap, and partner with product marketing on technical content and competitive positioning.
  • Partner with sales leadership on pipeline and individual deals, identify patterns in wins and stalled deals, and shape technical strategy for important opportunities.

Benefits

  • Competitive compensation consisting of base salary and commission.
  • Equity in a high-growth startup.
  • Opportunity to significantly influence a rapidly expanding market.
