Head of Engineering

Flock Homes•San Francisco, CA

About The Position

Flock Homes is hiring a Head of Engineering to run engineering while scaling its existing products and building Flock Homes 2.0. This is a hands-on player-coach role responsible for the people, roadmap, architecture, sprints, and a meaningful share of the code. The company is a lean team without a product manager, so the role also translates business vision into product vision, prioritizes requirements, and determines what is and is not worth building. The position has a path to CTO for the person who earns it. During the first 12 to 18 months, the role will scale the existing exchange fund infrastructure to handle five to ten times current volume without a corresponding increase in headcount; adapt that infrastructure for new exchange funds and vehicles; build products and integrations for distribution through financial advisors and custodial platforms; and run rapid go-to-market experiments. The Head of Engineering will set technical direction and standards, lead and grow the engineering team, write and review code, and work directly with the CEO, COO, acquisitions, investor relations, and operations. The position is based in an in-person office environment five days a week. Flock emphasizes high standards, thoughtful decisions, fast shipping without compromising its SEC-regulated investment product, direct communication, and substantial individual ownership.

Requirements

  • Have led engineers at a growth-stage fintech or financial infrastructure company and be ready to step up.
  • Have written meaningful production code within the last year and want to continue coding.
  • Have shipped software where correctness matters, such as payments, lending, brokerage, or infrastructure.
  • Be able to frame problems before solving them and encourage others to do the same.
  • Have opinions about what should be built and the conviction to argue for them, including with the CEO and COO.
  • Remain calm under pressure and distinguish signal from noise.
  • Be comfortable rapidly switching between product management, architecture, and senior engineering work.
  • Want to work in person with the team in an office five days a week.

Responsibilities

  • Set and own technical direction, architecture, and engineering standards.
  • Run sprints, allocate work, and keep the team shipping against clear priorities.
  • Translate stakeholder requests into requirements, sequence the roadmap, and push back when ideas are not worth building.
  • Write and review code and maintain a high standard for what ships.
  • Hire, develop, and retain engineers as the team grows.
  • Scope new products and help refine business vision into product vision.
  • Scale the core exchange fund infrastructure to support five to ten times current funnel volume without five to ten times the people.
  • Leverage, replicate, and refine existing infrastructure to support new exchange funds and vehicles, including those for specific regions or asset classes.
  • Build custom products and integrations for distribution through financial advisors and custodial platforms.
  • Run rapid go-to-market experiments, measuring results and closing out experiments that do not work.
  • Work directly with the CEO, COO, acquisitions, investor relations, and operations.

Benefits

  • Meaningful annual bonus tied to individual performance and business metrics.
  • Generous new-hire stock option grant with a standard four-year vest and one-year cliff.
  • Medical coverage.
  • Dental coverage.
  • Vision coverage.
  • 401(k).
  • Paid time off.
