Head of Fleet and Data

Tutor Intelligence•Watertown, MA

About The Position

Tutor Intelligence is hiring a Head of Fleet and Data to lead the teams and systems responsible for robots after deployment. The role owns field support at customer facilities, the tools used by that team, and engineering work that turns fleet experience and data into product improvements. The central goal is to reduce the amount of work that currently requires a trained person by making it unnecessary through software, better tools, instrumentation, and systematic fixes. The team includes field support personnel, engineers who build support tools, and engineers who investigate and resolve difficult field problems. The work spans software, hardware investigations, and direct customer communication. Many team members work to customer schedules, supporting robots operating in production shifts. Support engineers and operators provide shift and on-call coverage, with shift leads reporting to this role. The Head of Fleet and Data reports to the CTO. Tutor Intelligence is a robotics research and deployment company that builds robot hardware and artificial intelligence. Founded at MIT and headquartered in Watertown, Massachusetts, it designs and manufactures robots, trains its own models, works with end customers, and maintains a fleet across the United States. The company describes its team as having more than 160 people.

  • Experience building tools for operators and observing them use those tools.
  • Experience shipping software to systems that were operating in the field.
  • Comfort communicating with customers whose equipment is down.
  • A systems-oriented approach to recurring problems, including changing the underlying conditions that allowed a problem to recur.

  • Experience running shift-based or on-call coverage for systems in production.

Responsibilities

  • Hire and manage engineers across software and hardware, as well as the field support team and its shift leads and on-call rotation; establish career paths for both engineering and support staff.
  • Own the software and tools the support team uses to observe, diagnose, and act, as well as the data those tools produce.
  • Lead investigations into field failures, add instrumentation where data is missing, ship fixes, and coordinate with product teams on fixes that belong on their roadmaps.
  • Measure how often robots need human assistance and drive that number down.
  • Serve as the engineering point of contact for customers when equipment or robots have problems, and explain what has changed.
