Head of Fleet and Data

Tutor Intelligence•Watertown, MA
•$175,000 - $300,000

About The Position

Tutor Intelligence is hiring a Head of Fleet and Data to lead the teams and systems that support its robots after deployment in customer facilities. The role oversees field support, the tools used by that team, and engineering work that turns information from the fleet into product improvements. The central goal is to reduce the amount of work that currently requires a trained person by making that work unnecessary through software and better systems. The role combines people leadership with hands-on engineering and operational problem-solving. The Head of Fleet and Data hires and manages software and hardware engineers as well as the field support team, builds tools and data capabilities for support, investigates field failures, adds instrumentation, ships fixes, and collaborates with product teams on roadmap-level changes. The role also represents engineering in customer conversations when equipment is down and communicates what has changed. The position reports to the CTO.

Requirements

  • Experience managing engineers and non-engineers as teams.
  • Experience building tools for operators and observing them use those tools.
  • Experience shipping software to systems that were operating in the field.
  • Comfort communicating with customers whose equipment is down.
  • A systems-oriented approach to failures, including changing the underlying conditions that allow recurring problems.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with remote operation, teleoperation, or human-in-the-loop systems for robots or vehicles.
  • Experience running a support or operations team and automating its work.
  • Experience with robotics or other hardware deployed in customer facilities.
  • Experience debugging hardware alongside software.

Responsibilities

  • Hire and manage engineers across software and hardware, as well as the field support team, and establish career paths for both.
  • Own the software tools used by the support team to see, decide, and act, along with the data those tools produce.
  • Lead investigations into failures in the field, add instrumentation when data is missing, ship fixes, and work with product teams on fixes that belong on their roadmaps.
  • Measure how often robots need human assistance and drive that frequency down.
  • Serve as the engineering voice customers hear when something is wrong and explain what has changed.

Benefits

  • Fully employer-covered health insurance.
  • A managed 401(k).
  • Unlimited PTO and federal holidays off for full-time salaried employees.
  • For hourly employees, 16 or more days of accrued paid time off and 1.5x pay on federal holidays.
  • Regular in-office meals and team social events throughout the year.
