Head of Communications

Groupon•Chicago, IL

About The Position

Groupon is seeking an individual-contributor Head of Communications to shape and communicate the company’s story as it transforms from a deals marketplace into an AI-native experience discovery platform. The role turns Groupon’s strategy into a coherent narrative for investors, press, partners, customers, and prospective hires, tailored to each channel and consistent enough to be repeated across audiences. The position is the company’s only communications seat, but it is not described as a senior leadership role and has no direct reports or agency support. The role works directly with the CEO and reports to the CFO. It writes weekly for both executives, often translating informal verbal briefings into posts, letters, and other materials that sound like their authors. The role owns the company narrative; CEO and CFO communications across X, LinkedIn, all-staff notes, long-form letters, keynotes, and interviews; and external communications including press releases, the press inbox, the corporate website, launches, and earnings-cycle narratives. It also develops AI-supported communications workflows, including agents for commercial leaders and sellers, to keep messaging consistent. Internal communications and employer branding belong to the People team; disclosures and filings belong to Finance and Legal, with the communications lead responsible for knowing when Legal review is needed. Success includes establishing a consistent public account of Groupon’s strategy and applied-AI direction, publishing weekly executive communications, producing multiple formats from strategy discussions, using AI workflows for research or drafting, and avoiding disclosure errors. The role is hybrid and based in New York, NY; it is not eligible for fully remote work or visa sponsorship. The listed base salary range is USD $75,000 to $135,000 per year, with eligibility for an annual bonus program and benefits including medical, dental, and vision coverage, a 401(k) plan, and paid time off.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated strong writing that sounds natural and human; applicants are asked to provide writing samples, including pieces that explain a business or make an argument.
  • Ability to write across formats, including both social posts and long-form work, preferably on the same idea.
  • Hands-on experience building with AI, including an example of having automated part of one’s own research or drafting workflow; a list of tools alone is not sufficient.
  • Serious writing-related training, usually a degree in English, journalism, history, political science, or a closely related field.
  • A record of taking on responsibilities beyond those originally assigned.
  • Sound judgment about whether information is public and the ability to push back on a senior person seeking to publish something questionable.
  • Ability to write in the distinct voices of the CEO and CFO and to turn spoken, incomplete briefings into polished communications.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience communicating about a business or making a business-related argument in writing.
  • Writing samples showing range across social and long-form formats, ideally addressing the same topic.

  • Manage external communications, including press releases, the press inbox, the corporate website, launches, and communications around earnings cycles.
  • Build and operate AI-supported communications workflows for repeatable research and drafting.
  • Develop communications agents for commercial leaders and sellers to help keep their messaging consistent with the company narrative.
  • Exercise judgment about what information may be public and identify communications requiring Legal review before publication.
