About The Position

Under the direction of the Aquatics Supervisor, the Head Lifeguard is responsible for supervising lifeguards and their duties, assisting in the support and enforcement of rules and regulations, ensuring the safety of patrons in and around the pool, and maintaining indoor/outdoor pool facilities. This role ensures all lifeguards are competent in performing water rescue procedures and assists in the training, scheduling, and appraisal of lifeguards.

Requirements

  • 1-year related work experience.
  • Must be 17 years of age.
  • American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification (including CPR/AED, First Aid, Oxygen Administration and Water park).
  • Knowledge of pool safety, how to be proactive about accidents and the appropriate methods and techniques for providing on-site emergency medical services.
  • Knowledge of on-site protocols, operational procedures, and safety policies.
  • Work requires the ability to read, write and comprehend instructions, correspondence and memos.
  • Work requires the ability to demonstrate professional public relations skills, effective interpersonal skills and ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations.
  • Work requires the ability to pass rescue skills and first aid proficiency test as well as swim for long distances, minimum 300 yards.
  • Work requires the ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals and to compute rate, ratio, and percentage.
  • Work requires the ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions, ability to deal with problems and to manage large numbers of part-time staff.
  • Must pass all post offer pre-employment processes and/or procedures, to include but not limited to Drug Screen, Physical Examination, and applicable Background Checks.

Nice To Haves

  • Lifeguard Instructor (LGI) license is preferred, but not required. Individuals who receive their Lifeguard Instructor (LGI) license at the City's expense will be required to teach a minimum of five (5) classes or must reimburse the City for the cost of the training.

Responsibilities

  • Performs assigned duties necessary for maintaining a clean and sanitary environment by taking pool chemical readings and adjusting chemical levels when necessary.
  • Writes monthly schedules for lifeguards, including open sessions, rentals, and in-service meetings.
  • Supervises the daily activities of the lifeguards, including rotation, finding replacements for absent guards, monitoring the number of guards needed, position of guard stands, use of safety equipment, and behavior and professionalism of guard staff.
  • Ensures the cleanliness of pool deck, locker rooms, and restrooms of both indoor/outdoor pools.
  • Tests and maintains primary pool chemicals as well as ensuring the facility and pool water are clean.
  • Maintains rescue skills at audit quality levels and keeps physically fit.
  • Assists Aquatic Supervisor with in-service training and/or Lifeguard Certification classes.
  • Maintains records, including incident reports, oxygen, AED and work hour logs, lifeguard time cards, daily chemical readings, disciplinary action, daily revenue envelopes, and weekly inventory of supplies.
  • Attends mandatory meetings and in-service training as directed by the Aquatics Supervisor.
  • Works at special events and rentals.
  • Assists with the pre-season clean up and opening of facilities.
  • Attends training and orientation meetings.
  • Performs same duties as subordinates.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.
