About The Position

The Head Coach is responsible for instructing athletes in the fundamental skills, strategy, and physical training necessary for individual and team success. This role also aims to instill moral values, pride in accomplishment, acceptable social behavior, self-discipline, and self-confidence in students. The position involves significant public exposure and community/parent pressure, requiring a balance between winning performance and good sportsmanship/mental health. It also includes aspects such as extended time commitments, risk of injury, and due process considerations. Requirements

  • Has a valid Illinois teacher certification.
  • Employed as a teacher or substitute teacher in District 187.
  • Substantial knowledge of the sport's technical aspects.
  • Ability to examine new theories and procedures pertinent to the field.
  • Thorough knowledge of all athletic policies approved by District 187 Board of Education.
  • Knowledge of existing system and state and league regulations.
  • Understanding of the proper administrative line of command.
  • Ability to advise, coordinate, and support a staff of high school and middle school coaches.
  • Ability to assist in scheduling and providing transportation to tournaments and special sports events.
  • Ability to assist in the necessary preparation to hold scheduled sports events or practices and adhere to scheduled facility times.
  • Ability to coordinate programs with maintenance and school employees.
  • Ability to provide documentation to the Athletic Director to fulfill state and system requirements concerning physical examination, parental consent, and eligibility.
  • Ability to provide proper safeguards for maintenance and protection of assigned equipment sites.
  • Ability to provide training rules and any other unique sports regulations to each athlete considered a participant.
  • Ability to provide assistance, guidance, and safeguards for each participant by being present at all practices, games, and while traveling.
  • Ability to direct student managers and statisticians on respective teams.
  • Ability to determine discipline and delineate procedures concerning due process when the enforcement of discipline is necessary.
  • Ability to contact parents when a student is dropped or becomes ineligible.
  • Adherence to the rules and regulations of NFHS, IHSA, and School Board Policy for coach conduct, certifications, and protocols.
  • Ability to collect the cost of any equipment lost or not returned.
  • Ability to arrange for issuing and storing equipment and submit an annual inventory and current records to the Director of Athletics and Activities.
  • Ability to recommend budgetary items for next year in the area of the program to the Director of Athletics and Activities.
  • Ability to monitor equipment rooms and coaches' offices and authorize who may enter.
  • Ability to permit athletes to only be in authorized areas of the building at the appropriate times.
  • Ability to examine locker rooms before and after practices and games, checking on the general cleanliness of the facility.
  • Responsibility for the cleanliness and maintenance of specific sports equipment.
  • Ability to instill in each player a respect for equipment and school property, its care, and proper use.
  • Ability to assist the Director of Athletics and Activities in carrying out his/her responsibilities.

  • Ability to attend all required meetings (staff, conference, IHSA, etc.) and carry out scouting assignments as outlined by the Director of Athletics and Activities.
  • Ability to arrive early before practices, contests, and meetings to prepare adequately and remain long enough afterward to help players with problems or become involved in staff discussions.
  • Ability to help in the planning and implementing of both in-season and out-of-season conditioning and weight programs.
  • Ability to strive to improve skills by attending clinics and using resources made available by the Director of Athletics and Activities.
