About The Position

Q3 Contracting, a division of Primoris Services Corporation, is hiring Horizontal Directional Drill (HDD) Operators and Locators for union construction opportunities in Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Des Moines/Ames, Iowa; Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and Omaha, Nebraska. The positions support the safe and efficient installation of underground natural gas pipelines as part of an outdoor utility-construction crew.

The work involves operating HDD and other heavy equipment, performing locating duties as assigned, assisting with pipeline installation, and following safety procedures, construction standards, and project specifications. Employees read and interpret standards, schematics, and construction plans and collaborate with crew members to complete work safely and efficiently. Work is physically demanding and takes place outdoors in changing weather and active construction environments. Overtime may be available or required based on project needs. Compensation is union wage, with an additional $1.00 per hour for qualifying CDL drivers, subject to applicable pay provisions.

Requirements

• Be willing to work overtime based on project demands.
• Have strong technical aptitude and problem-solving abilities.
• Be able to read and interpret construction standards and schematics.
• Demonstrate a commitment to safety, teamwork, and quality workmanship.
• Be able to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
• Be able to stand and walk for extended periods, including on uneven ground surfaces.
• Be able to bend, turn, stoop, kneel, and crouch.
• Be able to work outdoors in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and humidity.
• Be able to work safely around elevated noise levels, changing ground conditions, and nearby slow- or fast-moving traffic.

Nice To Haves

• Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) experience.
• Backhoe and/or mini excavator operation experience.
• Construction experience in natural gas, electric, or other utility distribution systems.
• At least 3 years of experience operating excavation equipment in the utility industry.
• Class A CDL with tanker endorsement and appropriate qualifications to operate manual-transmission commercial vehicles.

Responsibilities

• Safely and effectively operate horizontal directional drilling equipment and other heavy equipment used in underground utility construction, as assigned.
• Perform locating duties to support accurate and safe drilling operations, as assigned.
• Assist with the installation of underground natural gas pipelines.
• Follow established safety procedures, utility construction standards, and project specifications.
• Read and interpret applicable standards, schematics, and construction plans.
• Work collaboratively with crew members to complete projects safely and efficiently.
• Perform additional duties as assigned to support daily crew operations.
