About The Position

The Entrepreneurship Hatchery creates startups leveraging University of Toronto research and technology. As a unique University Venture Studio, out of the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering, we offer a comprehensive suite of activities and programs designed to build venture-backed startups. Engineering students, faculty, and the broader University of Toronto (U of T) community come together to tackle meaningful problems and pursue seed funding. Our model sources business ideas from researchers, investors, students, and industry partners; recruits the right talent to execute; and vets each opportunity using our FEEL™ methodology. When a venture is ready, we provide seed funding and support founders through the follow-on investment process. In effect, we operate as a venture studio—creating vetted, investable startup companies while developing the entrepreneurial human capital required to lead them. Through this work, our goal is to ensure that a significant number of students and faculty build the confidence and capability to create startups by solving high-impact problems. This offering is instrumental in translating existing research into real-world impact and generating new research opportunities. We believe this will stimulate the economy in both the short and long term through job creation and increased economic activity. The Hatchery Go-To-Market Lead (GTM Lead) will have a mandate to provide expertise, guide, and coordinate the services offered to Hatchery teams under its different programs. You will be involved in the business definition and funding stage of our offering. In these stages Startups follow our FEEL™ Methodology, a structured process that defines a business blueprint and validates market potential. The process is supported by a strong advisory board of domain experts who serve as volunteer mentors. While ventures are not expected to have proprietary data sets, models, or prototypes at the outset, we emphasize defining a clear path to acquiring or developing these unique capabilities. The businesses we foster are grounded in true innovation: building on existing technologies, identifying what must be created, and informing future research directions. We offer 4 distinct programs: NEST, a summer bootcamp open to the broader community; LaunchLab, designed for graduate-level and faculty research driven start-ups; Start@UTIAS Hatchery, University of Toronto Institute of Aerospace Studies student-led start-up companies; Hatchery Alumni, for Faculty of Engineering alumni who return later in their careers to leverage their expertise and launch a startup in partnership with current students. The incumbent will, collaboratively, work with engineering students and faculty to create technically, organizationally, and financially strong and vibrant new businesses; Harness vast and varied resources of the faculty and alumni to help students and recent graduates succeed through fostering an ecosystem of support for entrepreneurs.
