Hardware Design Engineer

Apple•Sunnyvale, CA

About The Position

As part of the Wireless Hardware group, the Hardware Design Engineer helps develop wireless connectivity and system-on-chip designs for Apple products. The role focuses on the design, integration, and verification of digital interfaces and power delivery for wireless subsystems, bridging wireless silicon with other system-on-chips in Apple products. The engineer owns the end-to-end hardware design lifecycle for wireless subsystems, from architecture definition and schematic design through bring-up, characterization, and production validation. The work includes defining system interconnects and power-supply architectures, validating power-supply application circuits and digital interfaces, and developing bare-metal firmware for hardware validation. The engineer works with internal silicon, software, and platform teams and external chipset vendors, and supports build and bring-up activities through international travel of approximately 15%.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 10 years of relevant industry experience.
  • Experience with digital communication interfaces, including PCIe, MIPI, I2C, SPI, and UART, covering specification, integration, and bring-up validation.
  • Experience designing and simulating power supplies, power management, and power distribution networks.
  • Hands-on debugging experience using modern lab equipment such as digital storage oscilloscopes (DSOs), logic analyzers, and protocol analyzers.
  • Experience writing software routines and test scripts.
  • A proactive, team-oriented approach to investigating system-level issues and driving problems to closure.
  • A successful track record of delivering innovative communication products.
  • Experience with high-volume, low-power mobile products.

Nice To Haves

  • Master of Science in Electrical Engineering (MSEE), with relevant experience.
  • Experience with mobile and/or embedded processors and memory systems.
  • Experience with circuit schematic capture and layout.

Responsibilities

  • Define system interconnects and power-supply architectures with silicon and platform teams, and implement them in product schematics and layout.
  • Design and validate power-supply application circuits, including load-step response, ripple, accuracy, and stability analysis.
  • Bring up, characterize performance and power, and validate digital interfaces and protocols on pre-silicon platforms and first silicon.
  • Develop functional test coverage in bare-metal firmware to stress-test wireless chipsets during silicon bring-up and validation.
  • Drive root-cause analysis and debug hardware issues found through testing, validation, and cross-functional teams.
  • Collaborate with external chipset vendors on integration and verification plans.
  • Support build and bring-up activities, including international travel of approximately 15%.
  • Interact with offshore manufacturing partners.
