Hardware Design Engineer

Apple•Sunnyvale, CA

About The Position

The Hardware Design Engineer sits at the intersection of wireless silicon and the other SoCs in Apple products. This role owns the end-to-end hardware design lifecycle of wireless subsystems, from architecture definition and schematic design through bring-up, characterization, and production validation. The engineer works with internal silicon, software, and platform teams, as well as external chipset vendors, to integrate wireless SoCs into Apple products. The role focuses on digital interfaces, power delivery, firmware, and system-level debugging. It involves lab work, writing bare-metal firmware for hardware validation, and international travel of approximately 15% to support build and bring-up activities. The Wireless Hardware group supports Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, UWB, NFC, and emerging technologies across Apple products, developing wireless systems and system-on-chip designs to improve product performance and connectivity.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree and a minimum of 10 years of relevant industry experience.
  • Experience with digital communication interfaces, including PCIe, MIPI, I2C, SPI, and UART, covering specification, integration, and bring-up validation.
  • Experience designing and simulating power supplies, power management, and power distribution networks.
  • Hands-on debugging experience using modern laboratory equipment such as digital storage oscilloscopes (DSOs), logic analyzers, and protocol analyzers.

Nice To Haves

  • Master of Science in Electrical Engineering (MSEE); the posting notes this is preferred, with some years of relevant experience.
  • Experience writing software routines and test scripts.
  • Experience with mobile and/or embedded processors and memory systems.
  • Experience with circuit schematic capture and layout.
  • Strong interest in investigating system-level issues and driving problems to closure in a team-based environment with a proactive demeanor.
  • Experience interacting with offshore manufacturing partners.
  • A successful track record delivering highly innovative communication products.
  • Experience with high-volume, low-power mobile products.
