About The Position

Harper is an AI-native commercial insurance company in San Francisco. We're rebuilding the entire business as software, with the goal of turning expert human judgment into compute. This role is responsible for identifying and developing new business verticals for Harper to insure. It involves exploring new markets, assessing their viability, and building repeatable business models from the ground up. The position requires a high degree of autonomy, comfort with ambiguity, and the ability to leverage AI for leverage. This is a builder's seat focused on creating new opportunities rather than scaling existing ones.

Requirements

  • 3-6 years of experience in ambiguous, high-stakes work, such as startup operations, GTM roles, consulting, banking, or entrepreneurship.
  • Demonstrated ability to take a project from an early idea to real traction.
  • Comfort operating with ambiguity and incomplete information.
  • Ability to build structure where none exists.
  • Generalist mindset, comfortable with strategy, operations, and commercial work.
  • Proven ability to influence without direct authority.
  • Curiosity about the world and the ability to quickly form opinions on future trends.
  • Ability to make decisions and take action with incomplete information.
  • Capacity to learn new domains quickly, including new markets.
  • Proficiency in treating AI as a significant leverage point.
  • Based in San Francisco or willing to relocate.
  • Willingness to obtain a commercial insurance producer license.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience launching a new market, product, or vertical at a scaled startup or unicorn.
  • Founder or early-operator background.
  • Comfort partnering closely with product, engineering, and operating teams.
  • Experience in marketplace, fintech, or other operationally complex/regulated industries.

Responsibilities

  • Find the next vertical by monitoring global trends, new industries, and emerging business types to identify opportunities for Harper.
  • Pressure-test new market opportunities with limited information to determine viability and Harper's ability to serve them.
  • Collaborate with market and underwriting teams to define coverage strategies for new verticals.
  • Develop and implement end-to-end business processes, workflows, and tools for new verticals.
  • Acquire the first customers for a new vertical and gather feedback to refine the business model.
  • Ensure quality handoffs of new verticals to operational teams by identifying and fixing process issues.
  • Codify successful strategies to make new verticals repeatable and scalable.
  • Utilize AI as a primary tool for leverage, enabling the execution of a larger scope of work.
  • Drive quality and learning & development within new verticals.
